Approach on this pattern?
« on: October 08, 2015, 10:46:46 AM »
My son is doing the Danny Wiseman youth scholarship tournament and he posted the pattern.  Any general ideas on how to approach it?  Although he is not a high rev player, he is rev dominant.  On THS he will generally play fairly deep inside.  He typically tries to mimic this on sport patterns as well with varying degrees of success.

I am thinking a more direct approach here to start, but i am interested to hear other thoughts on this patterns from people with more experience than me.  thanks.

I'm guessing that with the flatter ratio, there will be a shot inside, he'll just not be able to miss way outside or the ball will not quite get back.  I'd probably start around 3rd arrow with a solid cover around 2000-3000 and adjust off that.

It's always a bit of a guess, but I'd try to keep the ball inside of 10 at the end of the pattern and just try following it left as needed.  Kegel Ice is pretty slick and may hold up well if not too many bowlers on it.  I don't consider myself an expert on this stuff by any means...

I don't claim to be an expert either, but I'll throw in some thoughts. Generally speaking, I adhere to the pattern length minus 31 method to determine where the ball should be at the end of the pattern. With that being said, 40-31 = 9. As such, if it were me, I'd start the day with a control piece trying to go as straight up the lane as I could to get the ball to that spot, and I'd ball down and continue bumping left from there.

A couple of things to keep in mind are that on most Sport patterns you want control off the spot, so if your son is truly rev-dominant, he'll want to use equipment that isn't going to go sideways the second it reaches the end of the pattern. Also, due to the high volume (28+ ml) and the very slick conditioner (Ice), getting in deep can prove tricky because the ball is likely to clear the heads and midlane very quickly (assuming the lane surface isn't high friction to begin with), which could cause the ball to squirt too far outside to make it back. Even if it does make it back, if it does so in a jerky fashion, your boy could find himself coming in behind the head pin all day long, which will lead to pocket 7-10's, 2-8-10's, etc.

Long story short, again, I'd encourage him to try to play the lanes as straight as he can for as long as he can unless he KNOWS that he can whack them from a deeper line.

Uthank you both for your thoughts. There will be a lot of pressure on these lanes so it will be interesting to see how it holds up. 40 lanes, so 20 pairs. Full field of 152 bowlers. So 7 or 8 kids per pair.  My guess is 8 and one pair won't be used.

This pretty much squares up with what I was thinking. He's a Motiv guy, but has one non-Motiv ball that I think he will start with (radical guru master). From there he will try to get to his revolt vengeance and use it as long as possible.  Then he plays it by ear.  May use his primal rage if he's looking for more angle. May have to move to his Tag eventually, but his confidence isn't high with it. Timing needs to be right with it. Late he will sometimes go back to his Master and tries to move way inside with it.

It'll be interesting.

I learned the hard way this past year in El Paso. That shot was 1.7:1 ratio (or close)
and I tried all tournament to stay straighter and bowled like crap.  I literally had to be dead on perfect or it was ugly.

My teammates  made a big move inside between 3rd and 4th arrow and bowled great.  They had more miss room than they originally thought, too.  Go into it with an open mind, and don't fight what's there.  If you try straighter and aren't matching up very well do not be afraid to try a move inside.  Good luck to your son.

Thanks again.  He's no stranger to challenge patterns, so eventually he will land on something.  I had put some polish on his master previously per his request, but may put some surface on it for earlier going here.  At least I'll have a pad in my hand and ready during practice.

I'll echo what many have said about ball selection.  Since your son is rev dominant, the best thing to start with is going to be a ball with a solid cover that is going to be smoother overall.  On flat patterns, there is not a lot of miss room.  Also, pearl covers are not great starting out because of the friction.  It's all about control in back.

Another thing I'm thinking is that many of the kids love playing inside today.  What I would have your son do is square up and play straighter early on.  There is that old saying that straighter is greater on tough patterns and it definitely applies here.  The longer he can play straighter early on, he will probably do better through the early part of the tournament.  Then, as the lanes start to break down, he can start making moves as needed to keep the ball reaction or change to a hybrid or pearl at that point when he needs to change angles with staying in the oil.

One other thing that can also help if needed is make sure he has an outside line that he can work with.  This way if everyone caves in the pattern and makes the angles too steep, it is an option that can work.

I did some searching around and I'm not sure if this may help.  At the very least, it can potentially give an idea of what he can expect.  The following are links to the match play portion of the tournament back in 2013.
