Thoughts? I know it's not conventional and will be mocked by some/many, but does anyone do it?

I figure if it works, why not? Any tips on doing it?

Japan bowlers seem to have the backup ball down pretty good. This video was posted several weeks ago in case you missed it. Robert Smith got a taste of the backup ball while he was bowling in Japan.

I have up to date only seen one man using a backup ball around here - very weird: a righty with lots of hand, shooting the ball in a hook across the left side of the lane! Saw that in a tournament a couple of weeks ago. Ball moved a lot, but did not carry well, though. Some women/girls around here use a back-up ball.

A few years ago ( to prove how easy the left side was in this center) a buddy threw a backup ball 3rd game when bowling against the center manager and shot 299

What the Asians throw is not a back up ball. It's a topped spinner ball. The backup ball is a different type of ball roll.

A back up ball is when a person rolls their bowling ball down the lane and it curves or hooks toward the 10 pin for a right-hander or toward the 7 pin for a left-hander. This is done as the ball transitions from the slide to the hook zone of a bowling lane. I don't care if his or her release is a spinner, helicopter or two handed or what the roll is.

No tips. However at Junior Gold one year, I bowled with Adam Martinez in qualifying the year he won it. He throws a great back up ball. Best I've ever seen by far. Won JOG and bowled in the Clash of Champions TV show (maybe on youtube?). So, yes, it can be done to an extremely high level to average 220 on sport shots for 36 games...

Usually no more than 12-4lbs. When they use the "helicopter" spinning release, it usually causes the ball to deflect a lot when it hits the pins. A lot of people have been successful overseas using that.

Some overseas bowlers are using a helicopter shot, with a lighter bowling ball, check You Tube several examples there.

Righty in my area throws a backup. Used to average right around 200. Weirdest thing to watch, but was actually quite smooth.

Balls in the bag and order they come out:
#1/2 Nano and Anarchy #3- Virtual Energy #4- Gravity Shift #5- Big Hit (spare and really dry)
#6- Teal Rhino Pro (oldie but a goodie)

You want to tell me the Asian guy throwing the ball, is the same thing that Robert Smith is doing in the link above. No way, not in my opinion.

A helicopter release or Asian spinner is not a back up ball IMHO. I'm not going to argue with you...

For the rest of us here. The Asian spinner spins like a top, with extreme forward spin. The bowler may throw the ball with their wrist and elbow inside the ball, but their hand comes over the top a way to produce the spin.

The back up ball works like a hook ball, but in the reverse action of the throwing hand. Many good back up players can hook the ball and make the ball look normal if you didn't see their physical game.

The difference is the back up bowler attempts to hook the ball, and the spinner does just that, spin the ball with a very light ball with extreme top spin.

I know of a very good 230+ back up player that has a rev rate of any tour professional. It's amazing.

Years ago ...say 10 I bowled with a righty who could hook it strongly regular way.

In the tournament we bowled in he threw with balls drilled for his grip but with standard left handed pin positions and weighting he then threw a backup ball for all 3 games and shot a 300 81X.

I asked him about it and he mentioned that was a natural righty but often bowled backup ball on the left when he felt the conditions were best for the left side.

He also mentioned that at that time, he was spending more time on the right as conditions had deteriorated on the left compared to a few years before. Let's say we discussed this in 2002....
