Bagging?
« on: December 14, 2017, 11:29:38 PM »
So I bowl in a shitty 8 team, 30 week mixed league, that I had some friends bowling in for a number of years and I talked my team into switching to this league after bowling in the chain house for years. We bowl for fun but are serious too.

My captain mentioned some weeks ago that he thought the team that was leading the first half was bagging. They had lower averages than our team but the 2 times we bowled them they bowled way over there average. I really didnt think they were baggers as in my mind who would do that to win this shit league. I dont think any of them are of caliber to go bowl tournaments and there really are not any in this area with handicap.

So it is a split season league, they lock up first place with 2 weeks to go going into tonight. My team is fighting for second, This first place team is bowling right next to us and one of their guys literally throws 5 gutter balls with no doubt this was done purposefully. What do do when you see this shit? My teammate say they miss spares on purpose all the time but I can not say this is true or not. I honestly have never seen this before or have and didn't see it? I honestly dont understand why you would do this especially in such a shitty league? I bowl to have fun and have a nite out with my buddies, but I am always bowling against the lanes trying to do my best and cant understand why anyone would do any different.

Is this a common and I have never noticed? Or is it isolated?

Is it sanctioned? Isn't there some sort of protection about that type of thing in the rules?

Personally, guys like that to be met in the parking lot, and not invited back next season.

Soap box time.  Because people suck?  Honestly a generation or two ago a man's integrity was his most prized possession.  Nowadays people simply say I misinterpreted the rules and laugh and take advantage of those who aren't also raving sociopaths.  Rant over.

It’s more common than you think.

People will cheat to win a stick of gum, much less a bowling league.

It’s about personal integrity, and some people have none.

There are a few monthly tournament tours up here where this is common place. We have bowlers with "tournament" averages of 190-200 shooting 1000-1050 scratch for four games a few months, then shoot 750-800 scratch for four is they know they aren't going to qualify to keep things "level."

I get zero sticks in this tournament. Shooting 1050 means I still miss the cut by 60+ with the way the averages and handicaps are. It's certainly aggravating, but I just decide to not attend the tournament anymore.

You can see it happening, and I call it out, but it will just continue to happen.

There may be rules against 'bagging, but USBC won't enforce them. It's next to impossible to get someones card revoked even when the asshole doesn't pay their league dues, so enforcing something as subjective as sandbagging will never happen with the current USBC leadership(I ask before, but will again, how do we get rid of Chad Murphy?).

The problem with 'bagging is proving it. To quote the late USSCJ Potter Stewart "I know it when I see it" isn't really proof that USBC will accept.
"If guns kill people, do pencils misspell words?"

I disagree.  For as long as handicap has been part of bowling, sandbagging has been there right beside it.

I have found that openly talking about your disgust for sandbaggers in the presence of sandbaggers will at least make you feel a little better inside.  I like to discuss how much I think sandbaggers suck and if they were any good they wouldn't need to cheat.  It's funny because they know they are sandbaggers but obviously can't admit that so they get to hear you tell them how much they suck and they can't even respond to it.

Although it may have existed since handicaps begun, is still a lack of personal integrity whenever anyone uses less than honest effort on every shot.  The problem is that we cannot "legislate" honesty or integrity.

OP, you know why they do it in a shitty "why would you bag" league?

Because they've been threatened for doing it in a real money league by some big dudes lol

You didn't say how your league is handicapped. I bowl in a mixed senior league where the handicap is 100% of 200 and only one guy has over a 200 average. ( I think he is around 205 which is No biggie) That being said, If you don't shoot at or about your average, your team is screwed. I guess other team members could hold a sandbagger up for a while, but when enough games have been bowled the multiplier will force all team members to strive to make their average.

What I have seen more of than weekly team baggers, Is the fifth or sixth man coming out of hibernation prior to position round. Good old George McFly with a 150 average shooting 650.

Don't feel alone. We all have got screwed at one time or another. Bagging sucks and many handicap leagues havens for scammers.

So many of these type of issues can be worked out at the league meeting prior to the start of the season. Teams can get a good sense of whether they will be competitive or a donator by how the league rules are set up. I find it odd how many bowlers skip the preseason meeting, then have the bitter beer face after the season starts.

Guess one fix for the problem is never bowl for money unless you and everyone else bowls scratch.  That way even if they bag in a fun league you can just kind of laugh at them and point at that guy (plus those leagues are cheaper and some of them don't have to give stupid USBC any money).  Probably not something anyone wants to hear though.
