Ball Search - Opinions Wanted
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:49:00 PM »
Hello, I am looking for a symmetric ball for medium to medium heavy THS that is semi-long but strong at the end.  No gentle arc, no super flip (but more flip than arc I guess).  The balls I have on my list so far are:

Storm Optimus
Storm IQ Fusion
Roto Hysteria (?too weak)
Roto Asylum
Radical Yeti Uncaged (looks good)
Motiv Primal Rage

Any opinions / advice on this ball search is appreciated - thanks!

PS - I am a stroker/tweener slightly speed dominant (15 mph/250 rpm) with higher rotation angle (65-70) and tilt (18).

I would easily go with the Sigma Sting on medium.  OOB, it's a great pearl that isn't a true skid/flip reaction but is more angular than the gentle arc reaction.  Adding surface can make it work better on some medium-heavy oil.  You can also go for the Primal Rage as it can easily handle medium-heavy conditions but is more angular than the Covert Revolt.  Both balls use the Fusion Pearl cover which IMO is one of the best pearl covers on the market today.

Less angular than the Primal Rage is the Covert Revolt, which works very well on medium-heavy oil.  It is closer to a gentle arc motion, but is still a bit angular and very continuous on the back.

Thanks guys.  It may be between Motiv Primal Rage and Storm Optimus right now.  I am hearing good things about Motiv and Storm seems to be known for the reaction I am looking for.  How about coverstock durability, ability to refresh, surface changability, etc?  Similar?

It's really difficult to make these suggstions, but if you are on true mediums with clean backends, I think the IQ Tour Fusion would be ideal. Being a hybrid, it gets some push without being squirty, and it reacts powerfully off the spot without going sideways. For me, that's always been the beauty of hybrids. They give you the best of both worlds. I tend to like them when I need to start moving inside, but I still want some midlane read and a controllable move.

Now, if you want a ball that you can use all three games, you may want to go with the Optimus or the Primal. For me, the Fusion isn't as good when I want to go straighter because it finishes too hard through the deck, leaving 9-pins and such. If I want to go straighter, I tend to go with a pearl with a lower RG, something that starts up sooner and is smoother through the pins. My Lucid is excellent for that. I imagine the Optimus would be as well.

Having thrown Storm/Roto Grip and now Motiv, I find that the Motiv covers are similar in durability.  Both brands make very good covers that handle refreshes and changes well.  I have noticed that the Motiv covers don't seem to absorb oil as quickly compared to Storm/Roto.  Also, I find that Motiv seems to have balls that are a little more versatile in some cases, especially with the Fusion Pearl cover.  IMO, it's arguably the best pearl cover currently available.

In all seriousness, Storm/Roto Grip and Motiv all make great equipment.  I've had success throwing all 3 brands, and would recommend anything from these 3 brands.

My vote would be the fusion. As stated before, best of both worlds.

The Rotos you mentioned are fairly smooth. I think the uncaged could be super flippy. The primal could be too strong.
