Ball Suggestion - thinking Primal Rage
« on: October 24, 2014, 02:30:31 PM »
Currently bowling on wood lanes twice a week.  My Thursday league has three of us basically playing the same line around 15-20 at the arrows and this is causing the lanes to burn up in my sweet spot.

I'm currently throwing a ping down IQ Tour Fusion, which I love, but I think I need something else for game two.

I think I want to try moving inside because I'm more comfortable doing that than moving outside, so I'm thinking something strong so I can still stay aggressive.

I currently carry the pin down Fusion, a Frantic (which I also love, but only when it dries up a little more, and a Defiant Soul (not really great for wood).

I'm thinking about getting a Primal Rage because I've wanted to try Motiv, I know it's got a super recovery ability, and I think it will allow me to get in deeper than my teamates.

I've made the Fusion work great, but it's starting to get up there in games and doesn't perform as well as it used to.

Does this logic make sense? Any other suggestions?

For what you described, I would go with the Octane instead of the Rage. Or maybe even the original Tribal if you are at all rev dominate.

I've got 400+ RPM and am more matched, leaning towards speed dominant.

Thanks Milo, I'm going to keep the Octane in mind as well.

I've been looking more into the Octane, and it appears to most likely suit me better for the issue I described.  I'm not looking to handle more volume, I'm looking for something to move further inside of a burn spot that is already fairly inside.

I'm thinking of heading to the pro shop tomorrow.

I got my Rage a bit over a week ago and bowl on synthetic lanes but used to bowl on wood lanes. Thru the early results with my Rage and rememebring how balls react on wood lanes, especially when the oil begins to move or go, I think the Rage would be too much ball.  I bowl on medium oil most of the time on the synthetic lanes and it is almost too much ball for medium, thus needing a bit more oil, for my style anyhow.

I see several have mentioned the Octane. I don't have an Octane yet to comment here, but do have one on the way in hopes it will do what my Rage isn't doing when the oil begins to go.

I throw my rage on absolutely everything right now. I throw on a medium shot in synthetic lanes, medium oil on wood lanes with strong backends, and wood lanes with heavy oil and stupidly tame backends due to carry down. I love it to death now that I put 500 grit plus polish on it. It has a hard arc reaction that is controllable enough to deal with stupid backends on both ends of the spectrum, but still doesn't have so much surface that it burns up. I can use it all night without a problem.

Ended up going with the Octane at box finish with a 5" pin that ended up above the fingers.

Thanks to Milo for the suggestion, the pro shop helped me determine that is probably exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm also trying an oval thumb with a different lateral pitch because I hadn't had my hand measured since 2003 (I was 15).  My hand is basically the same size, but hopefully the pitch change with help bring my track away from clipping the thumb hole.

I've never been not excited to pick up a new ball!

Let us know how it works out.  I think you made the right choice.  The Rage would probably be too much ball.
