What is up with this trend I'm seeing of grown men throwing 14 lbs bowling balls?

I throw several 16s and am enjoying a late renaissance of strength in my mid 40s but I know the day is coming when I have to sell or give those away.  Careful what you say or think today.  The older you get the faster the years go by.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

Some of the reasons why I dropped from 16 to 15, then to 14 and now considering 13 include:  back surgery (16 to 15), wrist pain, possible tear in right shoulder, bad knees. 

The main reason why I am dropping in weight is because I love the sport or game of bowling.   :)
Also the reason why I started bowling LH.  Went from 13 to 14, thinking about 15.

Just curious - You regularly bowl LH or RH depending on the day? Maybe I misread but your post sounds like you're actively considering ball weight changes for both RH and LH.

I bowled RH for decades going through back, wrist and knee issues, dropping from 16 to 15, until I started experiencing pain in the right shoulder.  That just kept getting worse and dropped my scores dramatically even after going down to 14 pounds, so I decided to rest it for a while. 

I started bowling LH because I love bowling and couldn't keep away.  I started with the low weight of 13# to work on timing basics and moved up to 14#.   

After an 18 month hiatus, I started bowling RH again with 14# to see how it stood and while it was okay the first few weeks (two 600s in first three weeks), the pain started to come back (540 high the past 14 weeks) so I bought a 13# plastic to bowl with.  Using the 13# has reduced the pain to an ache so I am considering buying a 13# reactive to bowl RH with.  In the meantime, I kept bowling LH in one league and am considering moving up to 15# since I have no issues with 14# so far.  Fingers crossed.

My average RH is dropping week by week while my LH average is slowing rising.

Good for you that you wanted to keep participating in this game we all love.
I had some worn out cartilage in my wrist causing plenty of pain, magnified while bowling.
Tried a multitude of braces which helped a little I guess, but affected my game to much.
Dropped to 15lbs and wasnt sure if I had to go to 14 or not.
Had a partial wrist fusion and thought I would possibly switch to RH if I had to in order to continue bowling.
Had the surgery, took quite a bit of time to get it back to where I could not use a wrist brace and keep my hand strength(1 full year to know where I was going to end up),but back now and doing as well as ever, 220 ave HS, 205 ave on tougher patterns. Lost a few revs, but that's not a bad thing.
Now about that bum ankle...........

I considered dropping down in ball weight because of pain in the wrist. But instead of weight change I've found that icing my wrist when I get home for an hour has made a big difference.
I too am getting to the age where a lot of aches and pains are rearing their ugly head.
I'm 62 lookin for 63 so bring on the ice and keep throwing 16#

I know a guy that finished in the top 12 of 3 events at last year's nationals using a 14lber.  As long as you're in the hole 14 is plenty to get all 10 back.

Gotcha - thanks for the explanation. I wasn't sure I was interpreting that correctly and thought you were bouncing back and forth regularly for fun.

So I actually was looking at some of the 13# options for Storm the other day and what weight block they use. Centripetal in the 13# Drive I think. That might actually be interesting.
