Belt Marks on ball
« on: February 03, 2011, 11:21:24 AM »
Ok, so I've been battling this issue all year long.......    everytime I go bowling for league, I end up with a crap load of belt marks on my bowling balls......    And I swear sometimes, its only my equipment that it happens too....

I'm just curious as to what causes belt marks on a bowling ball???   this only happens @ this bowling alley.....

I did notice, once bowling on the SHark during a PBAx tournament, i didnt get one belt mark on my stuff....   so idk what to think....

Honestly it was so bad, that i was cleaning my stuff every other frame, cuz it ended up being all over my track area and finger holes.....

I've noticed and I've heard others say it too that it's mostly polished and pearl balls that are more prone to getting those horrible marks.

My Mission barely gets any marks on it, but my Virtual Energy and Mutant Cell Pearl get a good amount on them depending on the lanes. My wife's Pink Panther gets them like crazy, but they wipe off much easier compare to the other balls.

Thank goodness for Clean and Dull, it just looks at the belt marks and they run away lol.

Norm,

for me it doesnt matter if it's my Theory, or my Reign or Tropical Heat... it seems like all of them get belt marks on them.....  the one ball that sometimes is immune is my Virtual Gravity......

But whats weird is none of my teammates get them.... now it might be, because 3 of them throw Motiv... but idk.....

Right now, I use Hook-it, to really get the stuff off, and then hit it with some Alcohol, to finish it off.......

I'll even post up a video i took of the 3 balls i used tonight and the belt marks on them......

Im certain that the marks that are on every ball I own are from the back stop.

It almost looks like a Sticker was peeled off leaving residue.

Anybody have a suggestion for getting it off? Ive tried Ebonites powerhouse cleaner, alcohol, acetone and NOTHING gets it off.

Its always in the same spot on every ball and it makes a complete circle on the ball.

Well,

I use the Hook-it stuff, and then use some alcohol....... so its basically a 2 step process.....

saturday, I'll talk to my pro-shop guy and see if he has anything better, he does have some stuff called Atomic cleaner??  from Ebonite???  idk, and see how that stuff works.....

Ours suggested Acetone... it did nothing but start to take the polish off the ball.

I find Lanemasters cleaner is actually better than straight acetone.
Brunswick/Neo-Tac's Hook-It will also get belt marks off a ball.

I believe that when belts start to deteriorate, then they get onto ball's surfaces. They do seem to stick better to the tackiness of a polished surface easier than they do to a matte/dull surfaced ball.

Yikes! That's aweful! Is that on every lane? So many posibilities on why you get it and not the other bowlers. Maybe bring it up to management there and ask them, that just doesn't seem right.

Give Clean and Dull a try, its messy and needs to be cleaned off itself with water, but nothing is left but the coverstock and scratch marks after using it, and it only needs to be done by hand. It doesn't seem to take much polish off of the ball either. Its priced right with other ball cleaners out there. I use Valentino's Remedy RX after every session, then hit all of my equipment with Clean and Dull every 3 weeks or so. On my 1500 grit polished balls, I hit them with some Reacta Shine by hand when I'm done, or throw them on the spinner if I need Rough Buff on my non-Storm balls just to freshen up the polish.

What you guys are talking about "belt marks" IF bowling in a Brunswick center with "A or A2" machines is leftover contact cement that mechanics apply carpet strips to the ball wheel using contact cement..  The carpet strips come off and leave the contact cement residue.  They are on the ball wheel and as the ball wheel rotates n the back on the machine the carpet strips cause friction by picking up the ball against the urethane lift rods and pull the ball up to the top of the machine allowing it to roll into the ball track and back to the bowler via the ball return.  So, you have old contact cement against your ball instead of the carpet strip.  That's what the residue is.

If you get a lot of this old contact cement on your equipment....it's a red flag that your center is not doing daily cleaning of the pin setters.  During daily cleaning all of these types of maladies will be noted and immediately rectified.  Poor maintenance at that center.
