Best Ball for Full Roller/Slow Ball Speed?
« on: February 04, 2011, 10:55:31 PM »
I'm one of those holdovers who still hasn't been able to make the change to throwing a semi-roller, and my ball speed is only about 11-12 mph. But that doesn't mean I don't want to take advantage of the right coverstock and weight block technology... Can someone help me pick a good ball for heavier "house" oil conditions?

I'd suggest something with a symmetrical core and pearl coverstock, made for dry to medium oil. Also maybe getting 1 lb lighter would increase your speed.

A freind of mine who has a bit more ball speed than you but still rolls full roller has found sucess with the Reign of Fire.  Would depend on the type of conditions you encounter.  He bowls on a house the is decently med-heavy oil.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'm already down to a 14-pound ball now, and I know most manufacturers change the weight block when they go below 14 pounds, if they even make the ball in a 13-pound weight...

I know a lot of bowlers will say this ball is too strong, but the long and strong full roller drilling on the Brunswick Alpa Max is a tremendous ball for a full roller bowler.  I bowl with some senior bowlers who throw the Alpha Max and they look great throwing the ball.  The ball can be polished if needed, but they are throwing the ball out of the box condition and doing very well.  These seniors are in the mid 70's to early 80's.

I too am a full roller.  My ball speed is faster than yours, however, after trying numerous different full roller layouts on differnet bowling balls, I have found that Hammer bowling balls work very well with full roller drillings.  I am currently using the Taboo, which is an amazing ball, but may be too much for you.  I would recommend something in the black widow line.

Again I thank you for your recommendations - one ball I am using now is a Black Widow Sting but I think because of miscommunication with the ball driller it was not drilled for full roller. He may have assumed that like 99.9% of the rest of the world I throw semi-roller and didn't look at my other equipment; I forgot that he was not my usual ball driller and didn't know me - so it's equal blame. My other ball is Columbia Formula (properly drilled) but it is getting old.

Second that. My first guess was a ball with a symmetrical, low RG core and a milder coverstock. Brunswick's Python might be an option: Mid range piece, the cover allows great length though the heads even with little oil (good for the low speed), and its lower RG core makes for a quick revving phase once the ball hits the dry, for a good forward roll. The older (discontinued) Smash Zone might also be an option, if you can find one.
