I had my hand recently remeasured for the first time in 12 years. I went from an extremely tight span (stretched out too far) to a very relaxed span. Now I can't hit the broadside of a barn if I was standing in it. My hand feels so much better with the new span. I feel like I could bowl 40 games a day with no pain now but my accuracy has gone to crap. I am doing good to hit within 5 boards of my target.

When I did that at the suggestion of Mo Pinel my avg went down 15 pins and I stayed with it for a couple of seasons. When I went back to my old span, or close to it, my avg went back up. I regretted listening to mo on the 1st place. Just my opinion,,,

Comes with practice. Ill never go back to my old span. The more i practice, the better my game gets. Relaxed my span last year and my avg has gon up 20 pins. Ball is much easier to deliver. Be mindful to keep your hand open as not to grab. A lot of bowlers relax there span but still grab because that is what they are accustomed to doing so they are inaccurate or get out of time. Just keep practicing.

How do you keep control of the ball without grabbing it. I know it's a dumb question. I'm just desperate. I bowled a 509 last night and now a 473 tonight. I'm normally good for at least a 600. Do you think it's too relaxed? How tight should my thumb hole be?

A relaxed span will allow you to relax your hand and go through the approach. Your thumb should be tight, trust me, if it goes in it'll come out. Targeting has a lot to do with where your shoulders. How are you missing your target? Big thing about coaching is keep at it, you'll suck for a while and then when you pick it up you'll surpass where you were. However, make sure you keep your old span and pitches just in case you dont like it, you can always go back.

I'm missing left and right. I'm completely inconsistent. My thumb hole has to be way too loose. Thank you so much for your response. Aaron

No problem. I like to see people headed in the right direction. The purpose of this site is to help anyone who wants help. Just remember to give it time. I sucked for the entire summer. New span, pitches, coaching. But im starting to really to consistently put it together and the game is so much easier.

More forward pitch in the fingers will help to keep you from grabbing the ball too much.

It sounds like you were muscling the ball big time.  I would guess you maybe having a timing issue and a muscling issue/grabbing.  The best way to fight that is to have someone video tape you and look at it.

I just recently reduced my span 1/2" along with pitch away instead of in.  I started out struggling as well. Realized that my thumb  had always been too big with the stretch fit and with a big thumb now with shorter span-grab city!  Taped the back of the hole up with 3 pieces of black tape and focused on relaxing my grip along with some practice and some confident thoughts, I would not go back stretched now!  Just don't tape the pad side of the thumb as it could change your new span.
