Best bowling ball 4 me
« on: November 22, 2014, 02:29:30 AM »
I'm new to bowling, but several of my friends and I have been going bowling pretty regularly and I got bowling shoes and want to buy a bowling ball. My throw is straight and does not curve. Would like to get a fairly nice bowling ball. Any suggestions?

If you have a local pro shop in your area, I would start there. I recommend the Columbia Freeze. It is a good $$$ value and probably a nice fit for you. The Freeze has a smooth and symmetrical arc which is fairly easy to control. You can use the Freeze on a variety of house patterns.

Good luck on your purchase.

I recommend three balls for beginners, Columbia Freeze (already mentioned), Ebonite Cyclone (my personal favorite), and Brunswick Strike King.  --  JohnP

if you throw it straight and have no interest in the ball hooking, getting a plastic ball is cheaper and might be the better option. If you want to learn how to hook, the balls such as the cyclone, the tropical heat/breeze, misfits, or the strike king are some possible options

Ebonite Cyclone, a really great ball and even more so for it's cheaper price.

Look, he says he throws a straight ball but we all know that will only last until he figures out how to make his new ball hook.  Unless he quits first and I hope that doesn't happen.  He needs reactive resin.  --  JohnP

Money is not a issue, so I not limited by that issue. I throw straight because it works really well for me and I am happy so far with bowling straight, I know that most bowlers throw there ball to make it hook. But, I'm happy with my throw and score.

Although my wife has bowled on leagues, she does it mainly just for fun.  She recently entered and won a drawing for a $300 gift card good at the local pro shops, so she decided to get a new ball.  She throws straight, fairly hard and with a conventional grip.  So we talked to the pro shop operater and the first ball he recommended was the Cyclone.  His reasoning was that even though she throws straight, a reactive resin ball is just better than the plastic balls.  Better reaction, better pin action, etc....  And in the event that she starts bowling more seriously, it's a ball she can "grow into".  Made sense to me.  So we went to a big clearance sale the pro shops were having this past weekend and she left with a Stike King.

So while I'm not as experienced a bowler as most here, FWIW, I'd say go with an entry level reactive resin ball.

Good luck!!

Failed to mention that my wife currently throws an old Columbia Galaxy.

You're happy with your throw and score now, but based on your picture you're competitive.  When opponents that throw a hook ball regularly beat you you'll change your mind.  Entry level reactive resin balls aren't that much more expensive than plastic and will work well with your current delivery (they'll go straight unless you release them with a hook release).  --  JohnP
