Torrent vs. Dare Devil Trick vs. IQ Tour
« on: August 02, 2017, 12:05:52 AM »
Hello all,
I am soon cleared to bowl again, and need a new benchmark ball type for this season. I have approx. 340 rpm with a ball speed just over 14 mph from the left side, and use a 14 pound ball. I am torn as to the performance of these three, as they all come highly recommended, and I am familiar with the IQ line, having owned a few in the past. I guess I am looking for a go-to first ball for the predominantly medium conditions I bowl on in the houses I roll at. I really wanted to go to the storm demo day, but I had to sit out due to still being on the mend. I am also open to a variety of brands, as I am told the Chronic Paranoia and possibly even that new Forza SS may really fit the bill. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. I know this is something I will ultimately decide with the pro I take lessons from, but I also know the value of asking and learning from the skilled players here in this forum, as you guys always give sage advice. Anywho, I hope all is well, and am curious as to your thoughts on these type of choices, of the benchmark variety.
Thanks! :)

I should add that I like a continuous, heavy hit, with more of an arc type shape, though I guess that is probably implied by the benchmark type.

For Benchmark solid probably IQ Tour or Torrent. The trick is a little too strong for Benchmark ball. Hope this helps.

If you are considering Motiv then I cannot recommend the Venom Shock as a great benchmark reaction.

The one downside you will find with a lot of companies is the lower end equipment is getting stronger and stronger.  I love the Venom Shock for league environments and even on sport, but if it is too strong you don't have much room below it.  You do have some similar strength pieces in the Octane Carbon and Venom Cobra along with the Tag Cannon and Freestyle Rush below it, but the stuff below is kinda strong to be considered weak.  There is of course a ton above it.

Core dynamics change quite a bit when you get to 14lbs.  Don't count the DDT completely out.  If it is too strong a little surface adjustment would help.  I'm more a fan of taming a reaction from a strong piece than trying to make a weak piece do something it isn't designed to do.  With your ball speed and rev rate the Tour is going to be a little blah IMO.

My vote is a Venom Shock. I think it fits ehat you've described and like the IQ Tour, is one of the greatest balls of this era. I think the Shock shapes a little more than an IQ Tour and is still very tunable.
League: Pitch Purple, Destiny Magenta
Testing: MVP
Interests: Black Widow, Proof Solid, Idol Pearl

I realize I misspoke.....

I cannot recommend the Venom Shock enough as a great benchmark reaction.  In other words, I LUV IT!!

Thanks for the suggestions, gang! I will say, I had not considered the venom shock, though I always see it strongly supported by those who have thrown it. I will confess myself really into the IQ, as I had a great time with the Fusion when that ball was around. I will look around a bit more, but given my ball speed, I would think that surface changes would definitely be in play on a number of balls in the running. Most likely, getting them to 4000 grit, as it helps, and I really never keep a ball with less than 3000 without modifying it, due to my type of roll and "marshmallow" ball speed, lol.
