Is there anyone else.....
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:24:36 AM »
that doesn't think they are as good as everyone else thinks they are or your average is?  I'm asking because I belive this of myself.  I don't consider myself that good, and see room for improvement in my game, however, people that I know think that I am good.  I usually don't enter scratch tournaments because I don't want to "waste" the money, even though my scores are good enough.  I am a pretty confident person, so it's not that.  Does anyone else do this?

I am not sure if I get your point - but if you feel confident, go for tournaments, even if your average would not put you in the winning ranks on the paper.

First of all, the overall experience is hard to beat. You do not get this in training and also not in your house league. Many players are "not that good" - but tournaments are THE opportunity to find out about then truth. I know a lot of players who just stick to their home lane: a 200+ average that only works there. Big ego, but do not ask for success outside familiar turf... Others stay away from tournaments because "uh, it counts against my book average! My image might crumble...!".

If you are aware of your weaknesses and flaws, that makes you IMHO a good bowler. Someone else posted in a topic concerning respecting other bowlers that he'd have more respect for a 150 bowler who knows about his weaknesses and tries to become better than one of those 200+ house hacks. And there is much truth behind it, IMHO.

Go for it. Earn respect!

I was bowling a regional ProAm in Clearwater last August and had a kid walk up and ask me for my autograph. When I told him I wasn't a pro, he walked away embarrassed.

I had just smashed my ankle during practice trying to throw a reverse pitch thumb drill for the first time ever and proceeded to throw a 120 game. I can only think the kid saw my shot and good post at the line but neglected to see the Denny's patch and 120 game =P

I look like I can bowl really well, but scoring is another story.. haha. My golf shot looks good too, but I have a nasty slice.

I just started with Palmer Fallgren coaching me on Saturday. Maybe we can get it worked out to where people are asking for my autograph where it isn't signing over a check for entry fee's that get donated to someone else's bank account.

But yes, I'm so far from good it isn't funny. I consider myself decent and tend to be humble.

I have no problems bowling in tournaments.  Actually, I love bolwling in tournaments.  I'm the guy that has problems sleeping before because I look forward to them. Wish I could do more actually.  I just don't enter the scratch parts of the tournaments that I do bowl and I'm not sure why.  I average a 215-217, which is up almost 10 pins from last year, and almost 15-17 pins up from 2 years ago.

Bucs,

I understand what you are saying in your post.  I get this all the time.  I carry any where from 224 to 235 average in diffrent leagues.  I get the question all the time "why dont you go pro"  I give the simple answer...I am not as good as them.  While it is one thing to average high on THS it is another thing to average and score on pro patterns.  I have bowled a few regionals and enjoy my time out there but do not score very well.  Most people that make this statement are usually averaging less than 190 and dont understand the diffrence between league and the Tour.  they see the tour guys shooting on a tough pattern and dont understand why the scores are down then see you shooting 750 on league night and think you are as good as them.  Its just not the case.

I'm as good as my average normally and this year, I know I'm better than I'm bowling.
