How much of today's game translates?
« on: May 20, 2017, 06:45:31 AM »
When I was younger, and was just taking  up bowling, I watched the pros on tv. I could watch them, learn from them, and take what I learned to the lanes with me to improve my own game.

Nowdays it seems, at least to me, that not much of what you see the pros do in tournaments translates very well to the amatuer side of the game.

Very few amatuers will ever see those conditions, and very few houses will ever be inclined to put out shots of that type for their customers on a regular basis. Owners DO NOT want to make bowling harder, or scores lower. They know that someone else, just down the road, will welcome their customers with open arms, so they do what they have to do to survive.

You know, basketball is basketball, baseball is baseball, football is football. You can either do them well, or not. Most of the bigger sports are this way.

Golf, as far as I know, is the only other "sport" that tries to handicap their activity by making it easier for amatuers by altering the course they play on.

When I was coming up, you could watch the pros, learn from them, and apply what you learned. It just doesn't seem that way to me anymore.

I loved it, because I could aspire to be what I saw, what I admired. It just seems like two distinctly different things these days.
Learn to laugh, and love, and smile, cause we’re only here for a little while.

How much of the game translates?

I will always believe that solid fundamentals will be great over time.  Anyone can get hot for a day, but the people who can roll the ball consistently and stay balanced at delivery will have a better chance today, tomorrow, and for many years to come.

Notckay touches on the most overlooked aspect of the game.  The measure of skill has never been about short term achievements. It has never been that difficult to repeat a few shots and shoot a big game.  Even to match up and shoot a big series.  Those things mean nothing compared to long term ability to score.  Likewise the ability to match up to one condition and repeat shots pales in comparison to having the versatility to   score on multiple patterns.

When I learned the game there were 6 high scoring centers in town, but some of them played better inside of 10, some played better out.  I got good in the game by bowling leagues in different houses, and practicing at all the centers.  There are fundamentals like having the timing to repeat a free arm swing or having an efficient release that can maximize carry without pure brute power. The modern league Shir doesn't reward versatility the way different houses did yearsvagom. However learningbti okay sport patterns dies.
