Bowling thumb protective tape, what brand?
« on: April 17, 2018, 06:39:38 PM »
Just curious as to what brand protective tape you guys are using. Have a little irritation on back of thumb, have tried vise blue, to slick. Turbo mint, nice texture but rolls up and won’t stay in place. Just ordered storm thunder and will try that. Looking for protection and also a consistent feel. Always messing with different textured bowling tapes like vise feel, amf bowlers tape etc. was hoping these protective tapes would give consistent feel while giving protection, but haven’t had any luck finding right one yet. Just wondered your thoughts as to what’s working for you.

I like the Genesis tape best of what I've used. I personally like the light blue color which I compare to the red Vise hada

Huh, haven’t heard of genesis tape. The blue vise hada stayed in place for me, but was to smooth, slick. I like some texture. I think the grey vise has a little more or may look into the genesis if the Storm Thunder doesn’t work out.

Checked out that link. 5 different textures to try in the sample pack. Love it. Do you have problems with genesis sticking on your thumb or rolling up?

I'll jump in on this. I love the Genesis tape. It replaced the Blue Hada for me. I've tried all 5. Personal opinion...
#1 - Too thin, too slick.
#2 - Better, but  meh...
#3 - Works for me when I want a release like blue Hada
#4 - Love it, personal favoite
#5 - Way too thick.

Genesis in general tends to curl on the edges as the night goes on, especially if I use two pieces on top of each other, which I guess most people do not do, However, it's way better than Storm, and I won't go back to Hada now... And it stretches much better, giving me more adjust-ability.
Just my $.02 worth....

To make tape stick better to skin, try this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_of_benzoin

Compound Tincture of Benzoin (CTB) is often applied to skin before applying tape or other adhesive bandages. To some degree, it protects the skin from allergy to the adhesive in the tape or bandage, but mostly it makes the tape or bandages adhere much longer.[2] It is also used by athletes for its reputation of toughening skin exposed to the tincture. Orthopedists applying a cast often spray CTB in an aerosol can onto skin before casting, as it protects the skin under the cast, and diminishes itching.

You can just use Q-tips to apply to your finger or thumb or you can buy the one that already comes on a swab stick.

I use the Motiv branded tape which is made by Genesis. I like a quicker release so I use the Motiv #1, which feels like It's right in between the Genesis #1 and #2. I have no problems with the tape rolling up, though I also clean my thumb before applying the tape.

I use Vise red tape (roll). It's thin and smooth. I rarely have issues with it coming off. In fact, I often have a lot of residue left on my thumb when I remove it. I usually clean my hands before putting it on, but it's not necessary. Sticks way better than any other tape I've tried (Turbo is awful). Only negative is that it sometimes folds up and sticks together while putting it on due to the thickness. Doesn't happen often though, but usually a wasted piece when it does. I can get out of the thumb cleaner with this tape than without tape when the hole is tighter.

I like the tape sold under the Hammer brand. 16.4 feet per roll and I've rarely had issues with it rolling up from the edges.

So I'm conflicted. I was using Hada Blue. Then found Motiv to work better for me. Then ended up just using a single piece of white bowlers tape on the back of my thumb hole and like it. I'm debating if I should continue the white bowlers tape on the back of the thumb or switch back to Motiv or Gensis on the thumb itself.

I'm out of all tape so now is a good time for me to make this call.

Edit: Sorry as to not sound like I hijacked the thread, let me give some brand input. The Vise Hada seemed to roll up by game 3 but gave a good release feel while it lasted. I tried the Motiv Orange and it lasted all 3 games and gave a very similar release feel. So if Genesis does in fact make the Motiv brand ones, I would vote Genesis and/or Motiv.

In addition to Vise, Genesis, and Motiv tape, there is Master's tape which you can find on Buddies' website. Master's tape also comes in a variety of colors. Master's green tape appears to be the thickest of all the tapes.

My thumb tends to compress, so I use the back of thumb tapes for a snug fit. You can layer the tapes if necessary. Last night, I started with a piece of Vise red (from a roll) and layered a Vise blue pre-cut piece over the red tape when my thumb compressed. The Vise blue held very well.

l like the Vise Hada pre-cuts (I have a small box with separate compartments for each color, along with black and white thumb hole tape).  I also like a similar tape that is made in Japan, but I forget the name (was like SP-something), and it was cheaper than Vise.  I also like the convenience of the pre-cut tape, even though it costs a little more than a roll.

I do have a problem with the tapes (any brand) sticking to my skin, even after thorough cleaning with soaps and alcohol, even dishwashing soap, so I use Benzoin Compound, and it works great!  One application will make a single piece of thumb tape last me all night, and it won't come off until I pull it off.
