bringing out basement balls
« on: November 30, 2015, 01:57:11 PM »
I store all of my older balls, that I don't sell in the basement.  I may go back and grab one just to see how it will react  if I am having carry issues. It seems like after the ball sits for a while, then I use it again, it has great carry, like it rejuvenates itself from sitting. Do you get the same reactions from older stuff? Its almost like I have a new ball again after it sits! :o

Depends, especially if you don't forget how the ball is supposed to react, or keep in mind that while it's been sitting on the rack for a long while, it still is going to be weaker than the newest gear in your bag.

I remember a few years ago when I was struggling with an Ebonite Complete NV one night, and while it and the Total NV were the hardest hooking balls in my bag at the time, for S&Gs, I threw my TPC Warrior in the bag, took it to the lanes, and had a better reaction with it than both NVs, and I had that TPC Warrior punched up in 2003 - 8-9 years prior to both NVs.

But if you remember how the ball is supposed to react, and get your look right, any ball you pull out of storage could be a beast.

I don't think that carry should really change as long as you're playing the right kind of line; however, I've often been struck by how much weaker today's balls are compared to those of years passed.

In their day, both the Inferno and the Lane 1 Cherry Bomb pearl were two big-hooking pieces. Neither handled tons of oil, but they could really cover some boards if you had dry to bounce them off of. Out of nostalgia, I picked up a Cherry Bomb Pearl a year or two back, and that ball slid like a hockey puck! I simply couldn't use it in the same part of the lane I used it in back in its heyday. Now, when I squared up and went with the boards, the ball hit just fine when I got it to the pocket. Still, it wasn't the swing it and bring it ball that I loved so much when it was new.

At least in my area, the new lane surface, different machine, and different conditioner being used all add up to old balls not having nearly as much bite as they did when they were new. You can still strike with them, but not from the same lines you did when they were fresh out of the box. Maybe that's just me and my center/area.

I'm still rocking a rogue cell, 2nd dimension and a theory.  I know they're not that old...but I still use em!

I also got an xcel pearl with 3 games on it...last ball with that chromaflair color changing cover.. 8)

I'm  great believer in the older balls.  All of the new stuff I try hooks way too much for my style.  I am a "control" stroker  and the "hockey stick" back-end drives me crazy.  Thank heavens I kept the old stuff.

Ever since my Lights Out cracked, my Ebonite Pursuit and Classic Zone have been getting a ton of play on Tuesday Nights for me.

I had a Rising Star that was ok but not very strong when I first bought it.  Put it away for a season or so and decided to give it a try and all of the sudden had a screaming backend reaction.  Weird....

i have done this multiple times and i feel like it works. I was using a storm anarchy for a while and then it seemed as if it was dying. i put it in the closet, since we don't have basements in Miami, and about a year later i noticed i was struggling a bit. I would say i was in a bit of a slump. To try to change things up i went to the closet and grabbed the ball out and said in my head "i'm going to bring this in case crap hits the fan." i threw it a couple shots in practice and really liked the reaction. The ball was hitting like a truck as it hit the pocket, so I decided to start with in. Lets just say that night I bowled my highest set. Started off shooting 266 followed by a 300 then another 266 finishing with 832. Lets just say that ball made its way back in my bag for another 6-9 months.

+1; I recently used my Freeze---not exactly a relic---but it had been sitting unused in the basement for a long time. I wanted something with a smooth and continuous arc, so I threw the Freeze in league play earlier this week---still a nice ball if you like what it has to offer.

From what I am reading it sounds like all of us will benefit from the balls we store. I have already brought out 2 that I had put away. Now they are working for me, when I need them.

Is it possible that the oil moves further away from the surface of the coverstock when it sits for an extended period of time?  Or it evaporates so that the surface is now clean to absorb more oil?

Funny topic. I've been killing lately with an old Cat Series, Ebonite Savage. I remembered when I first had it, I couldn't control it because it hooked too much. LOL!
Well, that certainly ain't the case now. I'm standing so far right it's not even funny. But when I rev this thing up......and it's cover allows me to really put hand in it.....it strikes with a very loud craaaaack!! that can be heard 4 lanes over!!

So I agree with all the assessments above; maybe time, slick oil, and a fresh point of view help balls in general.
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!
