New house, new challenge, diff. look...looking for tips
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:38:52 AM »
I bowl two leagues at a new location for both 1st and 2nd shift leagues. With the current balls in my bag, which are the lower end of my tiny collection of balls I own (6 balls total, bring 3), I find myself further inside to what I've been used to. It was over a decade ago did I play inside the 3rd arrow to start, to passed the 4th arrow. or sliding close or in front of the left gutter.

I can get to the pocket with all my equipment (including my spare), but I have a hard time carrying playing up the boards to my normal area the track or just inside it. These several weeks I've been late with transition and find myself making adjustments every other frame. Where as, at the other house, I barely even moved once I'm lined up. Rarely do I move more than 3 boards at the AMF house I used to bowl.

I'll work on ball surfaces to get me to play straighter, but if the house is giving me better carry percentage playing away from the pocket, away from my "A" game, I accept the challenge. My AT and AR are what kills me on lighter to drier conditions. The most "aggressive ball" I have is the Hyroad which I rarely use for leagues like this. But at other houses with longer and more volume, it's my favorite ball - cheater ball.

If there's any tips anyone can share playing away from the pocket, it'll be greatly appreciated. I got programed to play straighter keeping the ball in front of me longer the last 10 years. got to change that mindset...Also, I struggle most in my second shift league. The bowlers before us last night use mostly aggressive balls. One guy had a dull sanded down NANO and I over heard him say, "it's too oily out there." but it wasn't really.....Anyway, have a good friday and weekend folks...

Sandblasted Nano + too much friction = my ball doesn't hook so it's oily.

As someone who's "A" game is going as straight as possible, when I start to belly/swing the ball, the secondary targeting of my targeting system becomes more crucial.

What is your targeting system and how does it differ when going straighter vs. away from the pocket?  Do you change your mechanics?

Always tough to answer without knowing your style better.  First thing I would try to determine is the length of the oil.  If the pattern is long but low volume you may be able to move in without covering a lot of boards.  A lot if guys don't make use of moving their breakpoint in as they move left on house shots or longer soiet patterns.

(different houses where I'm bowling leagues)

The pattern plays much longer (40') and volume doesn't last more than 4 games on the right. Many in the second shift league are struggling and overall total scores is much lower. 600's 700 games came easy at the old place, not here. Keeping the ball right for others was an issue last night - frustrated bowlers across settee lol.

I really don't have issues in my fist shift as long as I can keep up with the transition which happens rather quickly to what I'm used to. It's the second shift league mostly....

I spot bowl and move the spot accordingly. In the second game I had a good look with a blue urethane playing a similar line on the top video. As I started moving in I kept the spot close (moving spot in), but started leaving corners towards the end. And when I got closer to the "hold" area, the urethane never got to its roll and deflected a few times. I switched to the Rave on the 9th frame, moved 8 boards left (up against the ball return), and my spot just inside 10 and buried a 4 bagger to save the team points. (took all 15 surprisingly)

Finally, I don't honestly know how to label my game. I can split the twig and I can play inside the 4th arrow. I'm just a house bowler with 4 to 6 tournaments a year. I struggle on lighter drier conditions and had to "adjust" my spare game. My spare hooks even at a speed at 17 mph. I'm from the youth bowler of the 80's and had to relearn the "modern" game starting with my return in 2000/1.

Most house hacks lack the ability to split the twig or play inside 4th arrow.
