Concussion Course - Anyone taking online courses
« on: October 21, 2014, 12:47:04 PM »
Just received notice that I need to take an on-line concussion course to coach sports.

This concussion stuff is serious business. Glad to see school districts requiring courses like this.

Are there many concussions occuring in bowling?

I can see having to take this to coach football, basketball, soccer, heck even vollyball, but bowling?!?

Well I have scenario that happen to my niece in volleyball this year. She slipped and fell back on her head out on the floor. Put her down for a couple of weeks.

I guess something like that could happen on the approach.

It makes sense if you are coaching youth. How often do we see a kid take a header after stepping over the foul line?

It should be mandated in any certified coaching and/or officiating organizations that basic first aid, along with continued education in things like concussion awareness be part of the certification progress. Most organized youth sports do not have EMT's/Paramedics on hand, and the coaches and officials are the first on scene.

As a past hockey referee (youth through Semi-Pro) and Volunteer Fireman (CFR-D), I would hope that with todays knowledge, we utilize that knowledge to help protect our youth.

Ok. I didn't think of that one. I guess you can't be too safe when it comes to these things. Better to have the knowledge in case you might need it, then need it and not have it.

I also heard there is something comming up that we will be required to take. The guy said its something like a 4 hour training session. It might be something with first aid.

Well, not during bowling but...

I had just finished league one night and was bending overputting my ball in my locker.  My locker was the bottom one in a stack of five.  The top locker was slightly ajar and had a couple of balls inside stacked one on top of the other.  The vibrations from my ball being placed inside the locker had the effect of causing the top ball above to roll off of the bottom one and out of the locker.  Unfortunately, my big head was in the way of the ball and the floor.

I felt the impact on the back of my head and I instinctively knew what it was and the voice of my tower climbing instructor went through my brain - Headache! Don't look up!
I was knocked to the floor and then I felt another impact on the back of my neck.  I thought it was another bowling ball but it was just the same ball that had bounced up off my head and had hit me again before it rolled down and off my shoulder.  There was another bowler who witnessed it and called for help.  I did not lose conscienceness but I was checked out for concussion before I went home.  Had a wicked headache that night.

OK, I know it's not right, but I had to laugh! Glad you are alright though. :-)

That's okay Milo.  I used to enjoy The 3 Stooges myself, but now I know how Wile E. Coyote must have felt.

MI 2 AZ glad to hear that you were ok! As a CFR-D with the Fire Dept I have responded to many calls at the local lanes, mostly for falls, and those were on the approaches and some out onto the lanes. Most were "lucky" with only some bruises and bruised egos.

BUT, we had many broken bones, and cases where the person did hit there head. Also a few heart attacks.

I still believe everyone should learn CPR and the Heimlich, and those involved in youth sports, some good solid first aid.
