Are honest staffer reviews the way of the future?
« on: February 15, 2017, 11:02:10 AM »
As we're finding more and more honest reviews about equipment out there, do you think ball companies will give staffers leeway to speak the truth about their products? Or do the ball companies expect us to believe that every ball is the best ever?

Before I say anything else, let me say that I earned a 1 year Storm staff position a month ago. If that cheapens what I say in some peoples eyes simply due to taking that opportunity, then so be it. This is my first experience being on staff, and I'm excited about it. It has been a lifelong goal, and at 51 years old, I wasn't sure it was ever going to happen. So, now, it happened, and here I am.

There is no script that comes from Utah for Storm or Roto staffers, but I agree that some of the drivel that I have seen written from staffers of any brand is useless. Obviously there is an enthusiasm for their product, and that is fine, but it bugs me as much as anybody to read the same "goes long, hooks hard, great continuation" every time, for every ball. It's stupid, and shows no originality, no perception of the way a ball fits into the brand line up, and worst of all it pisses off some of the very people that may actually have an interest in the shell being talked about.

I have yet to post any ball reviews here but probably will at some point. Until that time, thanks to all the people on here that actually have intellect and integrity, and do care about bowling, you guys are more important to the sport now than ever.

Luke - first congrats on the staff position. Similar to you, I recently was offered my first one - with Brunswick in June.

i run a shop, so spend a lot of time talking to potential customers about balls, of all brands. I do say that I give my honest opinion of a ball, but I also temper it with the fact that not everyone will match up with every ball. Just because I may not be having luck with a certain new ball, doesn't mean it's bad for them, there are other factors involved in the success of a ball in my hands, or yours.

I also don't write a lot of reviews, mostly for the fact that because I'm a staffer, people on these sites that don't know me will think that it's biased based on my position with Brunswick. Those who do know me and come to me for my opinion know they will get an honest answer, regardless of the ball they are asking about.

That said - if I do write a review, please know that it's because that ball is something special and I want to spread the word even further than my little shop.

I think we have been at a place for several years that it is not possible to categorically say is ball is good or bad.  Almost every ball on the market will work for me sometime, somewhere.  There was s yime when I could say a bad ball was one that when it matched up best was still no better than a more versatile ball in my bag.  Today we have such diverse tournament patterns in terms of length that no ball is vesatile enough for me on all of them.  Conversely the unique ball that may only work for me on a unique pattern is nice to have.  For example my Pitch blue is so confition specific that I have only used it a couple of times in the past year.  However on a pair of 35 foot patterns it gave me a better look than anything in my bag.  Conversely my IQ 30 is the closest thing I have to a truly versatile ball, and yet I almost always have something either stronger or tamer off the break point that is better on a tournament pattern, again, depending on length.
