Do you ever just get sick of bowling?
« on: September 16, 2014, 10:22:53 PM »
Title says it all...does anyone else ever just get totally sick of bowling? I don't even wanna be there anymore...I was a 190 average last year and 3 weeks in this year I'm at 152 and couldn't give a crap less...I guess my question is if you have ever went through this what did you do to get the spark back?

Last year,  I was on two leagues. One league is the type of league here 75% is one big family,  and I want to bowl there every week. The other league was one that I didn't give two craps about once I started. I finished with a 175 average in that league when I finished the summer league before that with a 189 and 193 the summer league after that all in the same house purely because I didn't like the league. I just quit that league. Other times I have been in a rut,  I have put a dollar down for high game with my team. A dollar isn't much,  but I want my dollar back gosh darn it! Or I set a personal goal to beat someone in average that I don't like.

When we focus on scores only it can be frustrating at times.  Find a way to enjoy the process of bowling, because when it's fun you'll also get better at it.

I'm there with ya.  Still recovering from a major shoulder surgery and my scores SUCK more often than not.  My average is way down, but I'm trying to have fun anyway.  Time will help the shoulder, but patience will help me keep it all in perspective.  Good luck.

If you don't want to be there anymore, then you should listen to yourself and take a break like Northface said.  While you are on break, try to figure out why you lost interest.  Was it frustration with your scores, the people you are bowling with, mental game, etc and then try to figure out how to fix that.  You may find that just staying away for about three weeks will rekindle the desire.

Thanks for all the replies guys...I honestly think it's just more of a chore to be there anymore...not because of my scores...what I meant is I'm 40 below last year and could care less...

Lol well, both my big dog leagues put out a tougher shot...it is weird getting used to a lower scoring pace.  I still made a Lil dough...but its weird!  Equally frustrated, but I know I'll be better at the end of the year!

I am not sick of the sport.  I get sick of all the drama and crying and bickering from people.  Griping about not having enough handicap.  Lanes conditions suck.  Hey he doesnt use a thumb.  Thats not fair either.  Tired of hearing it.  I will never get sick of the sport.  But I would be lying if I said I havent thought about leaving for a while.  Its not the sport.  Its the people.  It is way more peaceful on the golf course.  I can assure you of that.  If it wasnt for golf; I would have probably left competitive bowling by now.

At this juncture, I'm okay with bowling. I was away for 18 years -- I didn't look at any bowling of any kind on television, didn't go to any bowling alley, and I didn't pick up a ball from the spring of 1996 until January of this year.

There was no specific reason why I stopped bowling. All I recall is that I didn't go to the bowling alley like I used to, and a couple of days became a couple of weeks. Those couple of weeks became a couple of months. The couple of months became years -- lots of them. My suggestion is if you stop bowling for any period of time, don't let it become being away essentially for an entire generation like it was with me.

The other catch to being away from bowling for any prolonged length is the work it takes physically to get back to any previous form. That can either motivate you to get back into bowling shape and work on your game, or it could keep you away for good if you're unable to recapture that conditioning and bowling form.

During a long 30+ week fall season, I can get tired of it.  I would love it if there were more short season leagues.  I just can't bring myself to join a full length fall league anymore.  I will happily join as an extra member and only bowl a handful of times when needed, but other than that I stay away.

For me, not really sick of bowling but indifferent is a better word. I have only bowled one league (saturday) for the last 3 years, a few years ago I was ready for the next saturday on sunday. About mid to late season last year the feeling left and has been pretty much that way up to present. I am maintaining average, but if I missed a week or two due to work then I am ok with that. My wife on the other hand could bowl everyday of the week, so I go watch her in her leagues and maybe the feeling will come back.

I'm sure if I were bowling leagues that I would have become sick of bowling and never came back to it. I've not bowled in a league since 1990, and I don't miss it. Leagues simply don't hold my attention.

Like others suggested. Take a break. Everyone gets caught in a rut. Call in a sub for a week or two. I normally don't bowl in Summer leagues for that very reason.

I was in the same rut, shot HORRIBLE first week of this league, but had been off track the last couple weeks of summer.

Took two weeks off (one for Holiday), and returned. Started out like the rut - open spare - open. Then found something to salvage a small 200 for game one. Game two - spare - spare - sheet. Game three - solid 2teen game.

Other team not so happy since handicap league, but we all have fun in that league.

I hope you will take the time off to re-set. Maybe go throw a couple games, video yourself on your cell phone and see if you can diagnose the issue. It may just be mental.

It could be as simple as: Stop thinking, bowl and have a good time with your friends on the team. I was in a huge slump two years ago mid way through the season, and I was talking to one of my teammates about what goes through your mind on the approach. At the time of my slump it was "don't open". He told me to re-direct my thoughts to "I am gonna strike". It was like PED's for my game after that!

i more or less get sick of the scoring pace.....i get tired of needing to shoot 240 to have a shot to win a point. or seeing someone who should be averaging 180 averaging 210 and shooting 250 multiple games. or bowling a tournament that is a carry contest.

im one of the ones that league shots should be the nationals team pattern where it is still pretty easy but you get rewarded for good shots and punished for bad ones. and tournaments should be sport patterns 3:1 or less.....especially "high level scratch tournaments"
