does everyone use a "spare ball" for 10 pin shot?
« on: December 09, 2011, 11:12:01 AM »
i guess its time for me to try to cave on this subject. for 15 years i have used my strike ball and just moved left, killed the wrist and thrown over the center arrow. lately for some reason i have been shaving the 10 pin to the left or missing it all together. last season in 30 weeks i converted 65% of my 10 pins which isnt that great. I average 207 and bowl one night a week. i feel good using my strike ball for any spare on the left, i just hook it into it. as for the right side i have been missing them to the left a lot. SO....... should i get a plastic 10 pin spare ball? i still have to hit my mark but this should cut down in missing the 10 pin to the left, right? what percentage of people use a seperate, plastic spare ball? should i go down a pound to 15 if i do? i use all 16 lb stuff.

I use  a plastic spare ball for the right side. Another good reason for using a spare ball is that it cuts down on the wear and tear on your main ball.

I have a urethane spare ball (Groove, highly polished) for the 4,7,6,10 pins.

Not a fan of a plastic spare ball. You have to be more consistant. If you just started missing them more often now it may be you not the ball. It is a spot in your lineup that will be lost. I have a lot of area with my strike ball and prefer it.

I use a plastic Lane 1 XXXL for the 10 pin, 6 pin, and 3-10 split.

If you bowl a lot of tournaments where oil patterns can be very unfamiliar, plastic is generally the way to go. It reacts almost the same regardless of condition. It takes a while getting used to throwing at all the different combinations. Especially the 7 pin and other left side leaves (for right handers). But the effort is worth it if you aspire to a 225+ average. I've got to the point where I throw plastic at all spares unless there is a sleeper.

To be in the high 220's and 230's, you can't miss many spares. Plastic is a tool to help make that happen.

I use a plastic spare ball for all spares, leftside or rightside, except for double wood.  It doesn't matter what the oil pattern is.  The ball does the same thing everytime.

If you only bowl on a house shot, you will not notice as much benefit.

Cannot agree that you "have" to have a spare ball  to avg 220...

+1 vote here for kill the wrist and throw end over end. I'll take the extra spot in the bag and the consistent feel of a single ball over using a different ball, even if it's drilled perfectly.

Signature? I dont need no stinking signature...

I always use a spare ball for the 6 or 10 pin. In our house, you have "free" hook. It is too easy to miss on the left, even with a plastic ball.

You don't lose a spot in your line-up if you use one of the plastics with a weight block. I have gone to my XXXL a half dozen times this year and it is nice to have that option. Not to mention...would you keep a ball in your bag if it guaranteed you 7-10 pins on your average.

As a righthander, I use a spare ball (either plastic or urethane) at 6 and 10 pins simply because I am not good at flattening my shot. By using plastic, I don't have to change my release from shot to shot. I used to hook my strike ball at left side spares, but I am now starting to use plastic for those, too.

use my Blue Vibe for 10 pins and kill most of my wrist, hard and straight. I'd say I make it around 90% of the time, when its really dry I just have to make sure to kill my wrist completely and get end over end.

While I think it is better to use plastic/polyester/urethane for hook consistency for most spares,
I think if you're missing them with your strike ball, there is no reason for you to expect to make them with a less hooking ball. Slightly more accuracy is involved and it reduces the location and amount of oil from their significance in the equation of making spares.
BUT
if you're missing your mark with your strike ball, only a correction, either mentally or physically, will change that situation for a plastic ball. Better fix your problem first. Seems to me that resin is not the problem.

I personally use a plastic for right hand spares. With my lower ball speed it helps keep me online.

I know of several very good bowlers in the area who use their strike balls, one is probably the best in town and was a multiple winner on the PBA tour.

He has fairly high ball speed to start with and is able to simply power it straight at the 10 for spares and is very good at it.

Plastic does take the lane pattern largely out of play and eliminates one of the variables of shooting at spares.

If you are having problems with your strike ball hooking left of the 10 then I would consider it, if it is simply a case of not executing your shot then you have that issue.
