End of season burnout
« on: April 14, 2014, 06:03:47 PM »
Anyone else feel like they ran into a brick wall at full speed as the end of the season is approaching?

I live in the midwest and we are just now starting to get a glimpse of warm weather, i've already been out to Reno for nationals and while I have a few more tournaments and a few more weeks of league i'm finding myself with nearly zero motivation for it all. This seems to happen year in and year out for me, and while most summers I force myself to bowl summer league this year between work and my morale towards bowling this year i'm not even going to try and commit to it.

I usually feel burnout after we bowl state tournament. We are usually there the week our league playoffs start. Which means our playoffs start on Wednesday nite, if we win we bowl on Thursday for the second round. We then travel on Friday and bowl that night and Saturday at State. If we make the league championship the following Wednesday, I am usually worn out or burned out while doing that or immediately after and glad the season is over. Usually take a few weeks off and then get back on the lanes.

No, because I routinely take weeks off, if I want to watch a game (NFL, College Hoops etc), I don't go to league, long day at work, I don't go to league, if the team we are slated to face are "slow bowlers" or if straight just don't like them, I don't go to league. This keeps me mentally and physically fresh. Too often, I would go to league and throw one practice shot and think to myself "Got damn it , I shouldve stayed home". I don't deal with that any longer.

I started off this season bowling on Tuesday and Thursday nights at two different houses, so it was fun.  I coached a high school bowling team and was in the bowling alley 4-7 days a week, and it started getting old.  However, once the HS season ended I was asked to join two teams and I can't ever say no, so I am now bowling 4 days in a row, Mon-Thurs.  To say I am burned out is an understatement.

I honestly love the game and hanging out with the guys and all of that, but I am definitely looking forward to the end of the season and bowling 4 nights a week.  I am going to bowl a summer league this year, but if I need time off in the summer, I'll take it off lol.

Our seasons are 36 weeks long.  Normally, we are done by now.  I live in the southeast and we got a lot of ice and snow this year which caused us to miss several weeks.  So we still have several weeks to go.

I like what northface28 does about taking off.  That is a good idea.

I wouldn't say I get burned out, just more anxious to move onto something else.  Nothing but house shots happen during the winter, summer is when the youth sport leagues and instructional stuff goes on and I like being involved in that.

No burn out yet, I am in three leagues, two house shot, and one harder shot. Keeping interested because my team made the playoffs in all three leagues, which is a rare thing. Also, need to remain sharp for nationals in mid may, so I cannot take the peddle off the metal. If I were not in the playoffs, or not going to the nationals, I probably could not wait for the season to end.

We just finished our 32nd week of a 36 week season, didn't even shoot my average...in fact, I haven't been hitting average the past few weeks, so it's been dropping. Dropped 15 pins since the beginning of the season.  The house is old wood, very old.  This is a fun league, but the owner lays down sport shots. The lanes are so inconsistent and many of the better bowlers are really frustrated and not having fun. Yes, it is challenging, but not fun anymore. I pretty much decided to take a break at the end of the season and take the next season off. Might end up being a few seasons off. I guess I have hit that wall.

If I ever felt burned out from bowling, I'd quit and never come back. I don't tend to feel like that with any hobby, really....but I have a good self-governor about my hobbies, partly out of lack of time and lack of money to go crazy with too many leagues and tourneys.

Most people I know that burn out of a hobby are "too in" and it becomes distracting or more like work. If anything starts to feel like that to me, I quit doing it.

I do cut my bowling back to practice only during the summers, and golf instead. Summer leagues around here are dead or a waste of time, and I don't want to commit to anything during the nice weather. Golf is more fun for me when the sun is shining, but I still bowl to keep my skill going until fall.

suhoney did kinda take a shot at him . . and honestly, that's not too bad of a way to go.  If you don't feel like being there on a certain night, going could possibly bring the whole team down.  If you're thinking about the football game or what else is going on that you're missing, you may not be able to concentrate as well.  I mean, as long as you're not missing every other week or something, I don't see the issue with taking a week off here and there to refresh yourself.  33-36 weeks can be a grind, a week off here and there to relax and reset really isn't a bad idea.

I never get burnt!  Just had to drop from 2 to 1 league due to my wife having my daughter and I'm chomping at the bit to bowl more.  I love my daughter beyond belief and that's why I told my wife I'd bowl leagues after 9 so I could be home to put her to sleep, but that didn't work! Maybe next year!
