End of season burnout
« on: April 14, 2014, 06:03:47 PM »
Anyone else feel like they ran into a brick wall at full speed as the end of the season is approaching?

I live in the midwest and we are just now starting to get a glimpse of warm weather, i've already been out to Reno for nationals and while I have a few more tournaments and a few more weeks of league i'm finding myself with nearly zero motivation for it all. This seems to happen year in and year out for me, and while most summers I force myself to bowl summer league this year between work and my morale towards bowling this year i'm not even going to try and commit to it.

I wouldn't want a teammate who takes off every time he has something else to do. Not bowling because the team you are bowling against, bowls slow? Just don't feel like it? I bet that bowler's team just loves him. I bowl with two guys like this and I'm currently working the captain to dump them. Being left short because of this type of bowler is ridiculous. You either want to bowl or you don't. Just be a sub or get lost!

Once again I have to defend northface . . I'd rather have a guy take a week off here and there than come every week and be frustrated and pissed the whole night.  Bowling is supposed to be fun, and if you don't think you're going to have fun on a particular night or have something else going on, take the week off.  I don't think he's saying he takes every other week off or something.  What's wrong with being left short?  You put their average in and move on.  Now, in one of my scratch leagues we have a rule that you can only use your average once per third, so you either show up or line up a decent sub, but in regular leagues, I'm not seeing how it's that big of a deal.  One less guy to transition the lanes, plus you get done faster, and you know what score you're getting every game.  What am I missing?

Taking a week off if you're struggling or frustrated with how your bowling is a totally different animal and far from some of the reasons that were listed. What's wrong with being left short? You're kidding right? First, who's paying for the short bowler? I sure as hell wouldn't put $.10 towards such a thing. Second, if it's a handicap league you are at a disadvantage bowling short and that can't be argued. One less guy means less transition? Please! If you are so temperamental that slow bowling or guys you don't like make it so you don't want to bowl, you really don't want to in the first place. You just posted a bunch of crap and guys that think like this are part of the reason bowling is dying.

When I show up for bowling, I'm always slightly disappointed when there aren't two full teams.

I look forward to bowling every session.  Maybe because I'm young and haven't experienced all the crap that comes with being aged and grumpy.

My heavens, your tampon is extra soggy today. I dont just not show up without notice, I arrange for a sub and give them ample time to find one of their choice, I try to let to team know well in advance. Sometimes, theyd rather take my 235 avg minus 10 and get 225 or in my sport league, take the 202 minus 10, up to the team. Ive been on the same two teams going on 8 years, so I dont think my spot is in danger.

At the end of the day, its just league. It could be much worse, like guys that are 10 weeks in arrears with their payments, "but they show up every week and give their all", thats whats most important right? Or guys who feel its their right to hold the pair hostage while they go smoke cigarettes, but hey "they are there giving it their all". Give me a break.

This time of the year can be a challenge.  One thing I do is to never throw the same ball two nights in a row.  I have a few pieces that I know I could use every night and have a good look, however, I enjoy the challenge of using a different ball and different line in order to keep my thought process fresh.  Just an idea...

Taking a week off here and there can prevent you from struggling or being frustrated . .  Who is paying for the short bowler?  What?  Means he's paying double next week is what that means, if that's not the case, you've got some crazy league rules.  How are you at a disadvantage bowling short in a handicap league?  What's the difference between him showing up and shooting his average every game or just taking his average every game?  Lol of course one less guy means less transition, means the shot holds up longer, and means you should be able to score better if you pay attention anyway.

I get what NickRo is saying, kind of.  It depends on the league, both leagues I bowl in there are only a few teams I actually look forward to bowling because I know it's going to be a real contest or we have a friendly rivalry or something going.  There have actually been a few nights I've had trouble paying attention, one if we're bowling a fairly weak team, or two if it's our Thursday league and I have a couple fantasy players going that night during NFL season.  Again, like northface, both my averages are just a hair under 230.  However, I don't miss league unless I have a conflict that I can't avoid, I'm just a dork for bowling, BUT I can easily see his point.

In addition, I'm sure he doesn't just get to a league day and decide he's not showing an hour before league.  You can look ahead on the schedule and see who you're bowling the next week, you know the NFL schedule ahead of time, but sometimes you do just honestly wake up on a league day and feel like absolute crap.  If someone is irresponsible or you can't depend on them, that's one thing, but I don't think either of those terms describe northface.  If he was those things, I really highly doubt people would bowl with him.
