Fall Leagues (Age Range, Kickoff Meeting, New Issues)
« on: August 31, 2016, 08:41:03 AM »
So my summer league season finished pretty strong.  Despite having one of the worst records among almost 30 summer teams, I was able to get my team into the top 10 in the championship tournament where we then got annihilated.  Anyways, we got way more $ than I ever expected.

Now fall leagues.

I am worried I made a mistake and joined a league that might not be what is best for me.  The league supposedly has almost 20 teams of 5 people.  That means 100 people.  However, the kickoff meeting this week had maybe 20 people and all were very old lol.  My worries:

1) Is this an old person league?  Nothing about senior citizens was mentioned and if it was I would hope league president would let me know.
2) I have no team and will be put on a team (like in summer league).  However, it can't get much worse than what we had in summer (in terms of overall record).
3) 5 people per team AND old people.  How long will bowling night last? I gotta work the next morning!
4) Not sure if it is USBC certified.  My entire reason to get back into bowling is to get a 300 ring.  How can I get a ring if the league isn't certified?  (still not sure if true).  May end up buying my own ring on eBay if I get the 300.
5) The entire kickoff meeting revolved around $.  League fees, pot fees, raffle fees.  For a second I thought I was in the Twilight Zone.  There was debate over 10 and 15 cents on certain issues.  I was like WTF?

What makes me mad is that all the leagues I think I should have applied for have now started or are now full.  That means I will have to wait an entire year if this ends up being the wrong league.

I guess my biggest issue is whether the people I saw at the meeting is an accurate portrayal of what the league age is.  I picked league based on average.  Overall league average last year was around 180.  Maybe I'm getting trolled.  But I don't see how old people, many with canes, can average 180.  If that is the case, I'm doing something very wrong LOL.

P.S. I have bowled with old people on my team before and actually won title.  However, it was a 3 person team league and it was a mix from 21-80 years old.

Those 20 people who were there...

They were the same 20 people who were there last year, and they argued over the exact same topics they did last year!   Some things never change. ;)

Is the league daytime or at night? If during the day, it's pretty much going to be a senior league. Nighttime will have a mix.

As far as options, get on the waiting list for the league that's currently full. Individual spots almost always open up.

The league meeting you attended would have been a perfect to ask the questions you posted here. Did you try to get answers??

I get the feeling you are right notclay haha.  I mean everyone had an issue with every rule in the league sheet.  I never seen anything like it before.  The meeting was almost 1 hour long and there were 20 rules to go through.  I never used so much data on my iphone in my life lol.  It reminded me of a Seinfeld episode at the retirement community.  I kept hearing "second that motion", "I push this motion", "$0.15 is not right!", "whoever doesn't play 50/50 raffle shouldn't be allowed to win prizes".  I was like really?

It's one of the most popular leagues and takes place on Tuesday nights.  They have 'senior' designated leagues in the morning and at noon when regular people are actually at work lol.  I just hope you're right.  I can only imagine the nightmare of spending 4 hours in a bowling alley to bowl 3 games.  I might have to get a lane on the other side of the center and bowl on that while the other 9 bowlers go through their turns HAHA!

I wanted to, but didn't know how to phrase this thought "are there any young people in this league besides me?" HAHA.

The other league I was going to call up on starts tonight and I checked with LeagueSecretary dot com and the 20th team spots filled last night.  They did have 19.5 teams but they are filled.  Probably not worth it.  Oh well.  I've bowled with all types of people, just girls, just guys, people that have no clue of bowling, really good bowlers, old, young.  Maybe it's my destiny lol.  Then maybe I will find myself getting crushed by bowlers twice my age for 30+ weeks LOL!

Man, this site needs a LIKE button! LOL

This is exactly right, and every league has those same people, just by different names. The young guns usually have little interest in the league meetings, but they will be the first to bitch about the rules.

Haha guys.  I don't think I will ever forget this argument.  The weekly fees for several years have been like $23.00.  Because of oil prices and who knows what one of the items that make up this $23.00 went up by like $0.15 or $0.20.  So someone in the room last night said, just raise it by a dollar.  I was like in my head "yeah I don't want to have to carry change.  I don't even like carrying cash".  Oh God... WWIII has begun!

Someone in front shouts "NO! just raise it by $0.15"

Guy in back yells "Just raise it a dollar"

This topic went on for minutes.  I just can't believe someone would really want to pay $23.15 a week for bowling if most of the leagues I'm in require cash (I guess bounced checks cause issues lol).  And hell if I'm going to want to carry $0.85 after paying each week.

I should have taped the meeting and uploaded to YouTube lol.  It would have like a million hits by the end of the week.

Necromancer, how old are you?  What do you consider 'old'?

In our mens league, most of the bowlers are over 40.  Not many 18-25 year olds seem to join each year so the league continues to get older overall each season.

Senior leagues here start at age 55, but if that were the only leagues bowlers of that age bowled in, there wouldn't be many teams in the night leagues.  :)
Most bowlers under 65 are still working so they don't bowl in the daytime senior leagues.

Every league meeting I have attended will have those type of arguments over small amounts of money.  When they want to raise the league cost because the house increased the lineage amount, I have heard "You are taking food out of my kids mouth" usually from someone who has a beer or two (or a pitcher) during league. :)

As for USBC certification, that is usually mentioned during the league meeting, as in what the fees will be for the season.  If not, you should have asked the secretary, either in the meeting or afterwards.

Around here, they usually have a copy of last season's rules printed out so that the meeting attendees can go over them and make changes/corrections to be voted on.  Didn't they pass that out?

I'm in my 30s but everyone swears I just graduated college lol.  I guess young genetics lol.  Old for bowling IMO is when everyone is significantly overweight, walk with a limp or use a cane, or is obviously 50+ with 1 or more revealing health issues.

I think for the fall, my center has at least 3-4 senior leagues during the day.

Yeah the arguments over small amounts of money make no sense to me in a bowling alley.  Not because I have x amount of money or that I think it's not valid, but we are bowling.  Bowling isn't cheap.  Not like golf, but definitely on the high end of "hobbies".  I see these people during the league whining about $1 and $2 bets while I see them spend $20+ on a pitcher of beer, $10 for a bucket of fries, and buy a new ball every 2-3 months.  I'm like "is this real life?" LOL.

USBC was mentioned, but I want my 300 game to get me a 300 ring.  Otherwise, I'm wasting my time.

They did pass out 2015-2016 rules.  I thought that was just icing on the cake for how the meeting went so badly.  But maybe that was on purpose and the real rules will be given out on night 1 of bowling.  Makes sense ahah.

You should never curtsy on the lane, that will just delay the game.  On the concourse would be a better place for that.

I sometimes curtsy to the pins as a show of respect.  I also hope this sign of respect lowers their guard and thus making my chance of striking higher due to surprise.

But that just might make some of those pins upset, they realize this is not a ballroom.  Perhaps that is why he is only knocking down nine pins instead of all ten?

And one would think with that delivery, the pins would all fall down from laughing...
