HELP! which ball should I buy??
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:39:09 PM »
Hello, if anybody would be so kind to give me there opinion on a ball they think would work well for me I would greatly appreciate it, i do not care about money so an expensive ball is fine. I have been bowling for about 3 years now, i am in 2 leagues now. I average a 185... I bowl only using 2 fingers, thats just the way i feel most comfortable. The lanes i bowl on are about medium oil conditions. As of now i am using a Hammer Vibe, and it does not hook how i need it to be doing on a consistent basis. i have had numerous people tell me i need a new ball, and to be honest i agree with them. It is time for a new one!!! i just wanna make sure i get something that will benefit me and the way i bowl, which like i said is 2 fingers on medium oil conditions. I have been reading a lot of reviews and as of now i have been looking at.

- Hammer taboo jet black
- Track 919C
- Nano

.. any opinions would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much

Before making a suggestion, what kind of ball speed do you have?  Also, would I be correct in assuming you have a higher rev rate?

Which Vibe do you have?  All have been good, but some have different reactions than the others.  If nothing else, get it resurfaced and remove the oil so it can be a good alternative to your new ball.

Do you want something that goes long with a sharp back end, or something more rolly?  Although the former looks "prettier", the latter is often the better option, especially as a no thumber since they typically have a high rev rate.

my ball speed is about 18 19mph i think, and yah high rev rate, right now i have the midnight vibe, and i think the guy who drilled it didnt do it right, well thats what other people have told me.... i just want something to hit a little bit harder and i was lookin for something that goes long with a sharp back in i would say... i talked to the guy at my local pro shop today and he was telling me i should look at maybe a nomad dagger. but he did also tell me that a bunch of new balls are coming out soon here.. i dont know if i should wait or what to do.. so just trying to get any opinions or help i can before buying a new ball, i was told not to go for like a defiant or a nano cuz they will hook way to hard for me because i 2 finger it..  anyways, thank you guys for replying, i appreciate it.

Nomad Dagger is a great ball and may be had for a small price since it is discontinued.  As others have said, your Midnight Vibe would be a great ball also so if it isn't working, I bet a resurface and oil extraction could work wonders.

I feel any mid level hybrid would give you enough versatility for a medium oil pattern.  Though since you have higher revs perhaps look at some of the solids also.  You could add polish if you desire more backend.

If you are looking for actual ball types, here are a few:

Storm Crossroad
Storm Fireroad
Brunswick Versa-Max
DV8 Too Reckless
Roto Grip Rising Star
Columbia Eruption
Motiv Sigma Tour

I would not recommend anything like a Defiant or Nano for the reasons you stated.  And depending on how you release the ball, even the ones above could be too much.

Get your Midnight Vibe "refreshed" and then decide.  That would be my recommendation.

I will suggest for a solid look at either ROTO GRIPS - Outlaw or a Shooting Star -- Roto for a pearl look at the Bandit -- and Roto hybrid -- Rising Star. For Storm I would look at the Crossroads.

Thank you guys!!! Thank u so much. Ok so I think I have narrowed it down too the dv8 too reckless, the fire road, or the nomad... But I think I'm leaning towards the first 2. Have you guys ever thrown either of those balls? And I will clean my vibe up a bit and get it like new and see how it feels but I am still going to get another ball for my arsenal!.

I agree with the Nomad Dagger.  It can still be found in a lot of places and is still the best hybrid ball I have thrown to date.  That ball just flat out works for virtually all styles.

If you want a pearl, the Roto Grip Bandit is hard to beat.  You get great length, angular backend, and still get a ball that is predictable.  Solid: The Roto Grip Outlaw is everything you'd expect in a higher performance ball at a mid-level price.

For light oil- either the Shooting Star (solid) or Rising Star (hybrid) are great.  The Neutron Core is still one of the best entry level cores I have seen to date.  Plus, either of those give you good control yet they don't quit in the backend either.

I have been throwing the Too Reckless and took a little polish off the ball and its much more consistant.  If you go to the Storm website you can plot in some info and the website will make a ball recommendation for you.

This is not a plug for Storm, but what you will see is that with your speed and revs, it will recommend a mid level ball or maybe even an entry level ball.  Not because of a lack of bowling skills, but because the high performance bowling balls is just too much ball.

Another great ball in my opinion is also from DV8 and its the Misfit.  Its an entry level ball with a lot of punch for someone with good revs and ball speed.

There are so many great mid to entry level bowling balls out there but I would recommend a solid that is or could be polished or a hybrid.

Good luck,
Nicanor (Ten On The Deck)

Take a hard look at the Versa Max.  Sean Rash looked pretty good winning the T of C using one, and he has similar speed and revs to you.  I dont know anyone who has not liked the ball.

Surprisingly strong piece I might suggest is one I just got punched up thursday and that is the Roto Grip Bandit, very strong backend and amazing hit for me. I throw the ball about 18 and have a high rev rate myself and on our medium oil shot this ball was amazing. Just my 2 cents worth and good luck :)
