Highway to Hell
« on: July 26, 2016, 09:46:02 AM »
Bowled a tournament on Highway to hell and had no luck. Does anyone have any experience with the pattern or suggestions. I know it is about 40 feet long had a brutal out of bounds and the inside was a over under mess.

I had significant success on this pattern with medium equipment with an early roll.  My ball was a Sigma Tour Hybrid which is medium oil in today's environment.  I had the surface at about 1500.

I played the pattern inside 10 at the arrows (closer to 12-13) and slowly migrated in as required.  I kept an up-the-back type release to prevent overreaction on the backend.  I eventually went to a Thrash Frenzy (maybe 5000) and moved back right a tad.  With the Thrash Frenzy I was able to get around the ball a bit more to make sure it made the turn as I got deeper.

I never got deeper than 17 at the arrows with either ball in our format (3-man teams and 4 games).

For me the goal is to make sure I don't get around the ball too much.  On this pattern, when I got around the ball too much the reaction at the end of the pattern was either snap left for 3-6-10 type leaves or skate for 2-8 type leaves.

I have always had the most trouble on the 39-41 foot flatter patterns.  Having said that spmcgivern gives you great advice.  Staying behind the ball helps minimize the jump off the end of the oil that causes the biggest problems and forces people to use too much out angle through the heads.  Too much out angle in turns brings the carrydown in to play.

I just bowled on this pattern(43') last night, and found my best line around 13-14 at the arrows out to about 9-10, with firm speed and minimal side rotation(at the start) using my original Motiv Cruel, drilled 90 x 2.375 x 45, finished @ 1500. Misses out flagged the head pin, misses in went brooklyn(or further). Spares were an adventure if you tried to hook it. There were 5 of us on the pair, and high game was 180 the first game, 190+ the second, 190+ the third game. Game four had 3 low 210+ scores, so they definitely opened up some, no tug room, but a little swing opened up nicely, and I stayed with my Cruel, and added some side rotation as I got deeper, in to about 18-19 at the end. I was 2nd high on the pair @ -73 for 4 games. It wasn't pretty, but it was great fun. I wish I could find tougher shots like this more often.

We just finished 4 weeks on a 43 ft US Open pattern.  Scores weren't good, but I had a decent look playing about 15  out to 10 using my Alpha Crux.  Same advice as others give.  Keep the axis rotation down and keep the ball in front of you.

I practiced on it with a buddy a few weeks ago and we threw 8 games. My best look early was with a pin down Brunswick Brute Strength at 3000 playing in the track area. The last 3 games I used an Ebonite Warrior that rolled great on the pattern.

Accuracy is your biggest friend on flat patterns. During transition periods I had decent looks with a Motiv Revolt Havoc and a Storm Fight. As long as I got the ball around the 9-12 boards at the breakpoint I was in the pocket

If you have that many bowlers, you may want to employ some manipulations during practice to help you out some.  One thing you can do is throw some shots down 15 with plastic with the intent of developing some hold area.

Don't you know that the point of practice is to strike as much as possible? :P

Great advice on the plastic.  Too many people get preoccupied  with trying to burn a bunch of bump, when setting up the hold area can be more effective.  I think this is especially true on the medium length patterns around 40 feet.  Use the carrydown to help you, not hurt you.   Unfortunately it is hard to find a group where at least a couple of guys wont immediately get deep with a piece of charcoal trying to open up the pattern.

I started to notice 10 years ago that a bunch of us seniors would score higher on sport patterns than the kids would, but only if the kids weren't playing on the pattern with us.  Then we all got dragged down.
