Bowling VS.-------
« on: May 26, 2004, 10:17:55 AM »
OK. This topic came to mind today when I turned on ESPN and saw they were broadcasting TABLE TENNIS. I cannot see why the network itself wouldn't pick up the needed money for the PWBA to function. In most cases the women were more entertaining than the men....and they were certainly much more personable.

Think of some of the things that ESPN (espn 2 also)broadcasts: Strongest Man competitions, billiards, cheerleading (which, for guy type reasons is cool <<joke ), body building, college softball, table tennis, the great outdoor games, fishing....the list goes on and on. Now that we have somewhat of a list, before I even got into bowling at all I would rather have watched bowling than any of that crap. World Series of Poker is another one. I do not get the draw of watching people play cards. The excitement of poker is winning/losing your own money.

What can bowling do to get the viewers back? I know there are many posts like this one, but you see the competition bowling has (listed above), and bowling is a much more interesting sport in my opinion than anything listed above and I am probably forgetting a few. OH....the spellingbee....and the dog show.

One of the aspects of bowling that has totally been forgotten is the team concept. Does anyone find the Baker format as interesting as I do? I have only seen it on TV a few times, but every time I have seen it I could not turn away from the screen. I also think that the team format relates better to the average spectator......league bowlers.

What are your thoughts? I know there is going to be a bias here because this is a bowling site. But I am still interested in your views.

this is kind of an "off-time" for espn...hockeys ending, basketballs almost done, and baseball isnt on every day anyway on espn...so they need to fill the slots with SOMETHING - why not put stuff on that may draw people to say "wow...ive never seen THIS on tv before".  i think alot of that stuff is stupid being on espn, although i think the table tennis and world series of poker is pretty exciting.  its a good point, but i think some of these things being on espn are good for a change...watching the NFL draft is like watching an Eastern Conference NBA game

And dont forget...without such things as table tennis and all those other obscure activities, DAVE RYAN would be out of a job

Wait...maybe they SHOULD be taken off the air.

Does anyone agree with me that espn gives him a page of catchphrases and cliches before a sports telecast and just tells him to "read them all straight from the paper fter the smart guy speaks?"

We KNOW where the money's coming for Poker..I had talked to Leanne Barette a while back about the financial troubles of the womens' tour.  Couldn't help asking how they couldn't pick up sponsors from make-up companies, nylons, clothing, hair coloring...etc.  She mentioned that the demographics shown by ESPN to them consisted mainly of an elderly audience.  Then I mentioned that it was because ESPN ran the ladies shows at 2am or 11am in the morning,  who else is home to watch it at those times(other than me)?

It seemed really unfair but basically it came down to understanding television networks and their political games.  You can't have a better time slot unless you produce numbers but you can't produce numbers because you can't have the proper time slots to do it in.  Just our standard catch 22.....don't we do the same with "credit cards"?
