How much does drilling cost in your loc pro shops
« on: March 18, 2006, 02:50:36 AM »
Is the drilling incuded in the price of the ball or no?

If not, how much does it cost?

I'm wondering at a paticular new pro shop near me charging 50 dollars to drill plus 15 for a slug =65$ is a little excessive? Luckily I don't have finger inserts. I don't remember paying anything close to this high before.

The proshop in my house charges $60 to drill a blank that you bought off the internet. He also has this attitude about him that I don't care for. Therefor I found a new driller. He only charges me $25 for drilling a blank and I supply my own inserts.

Legend, good job telling that a-hole thats charging that much to go fly a kite!! He is simply ripping people off at $60 bucks to drill a blank. I bet his shop will be the first one to go out of business because of his crappy attitude about internet balls.  I would be the first one to tell him good bye. I am sorry to say but the internet is not going away so just relax and deal with it.. $25 -$35 is a very fair price to drill blanks. My guy charges $35 and welcomes all the internet balls he can drill. He is very smart about it.

I also bet you new guy will be in business long after Mr bad attutude is working at Walmart!!

Our shop charges $50 for a blank drill you bought elsewhere, no matter where it was. $10 for a pair of finger inserts and $15 for a thumb slug.

They may give a small discount for repeat customers or at the owners discretion.

If you buy the ball from the shop, drilling is complimentary, but you will pay a higher retail price for the ball. They generally try to charge enough for services that it makes it about the same "out-the-door" price for the customer.

By doing this, they make the same amount of profit whether or not they actually had to "handle" the ball or not. (by handle, I mean they didn't have to order it or pay for the shipping, they let you go to that trouble yourself)

This is the main reason I have gone to buying mostly single drill, used equipment. I can buy a ball that normally sells for $150-$200 N.I.B. for around $50 and then spend only $15 having the thumb plugged and re-drilled. Voila, $200 worth of ball for around $65-$75.

BOWL,

I would appreciate it if you wouldn't P.M. me and flame me without any clue as to what you are talking about.

I don't even HAVE a shop. The one I am talking about is at the center I bowl at and I am not affiliated with them in any way, other than having my stuff worked on like every body else.

Thanks for accussing me of being a thief without even knowing what the he11 you are talking about.

P.S. Welcome to my ignore list!

Yeah, but how much do the balls there cost? The guy here that charges $60 to drill a blank not bought from him, also includes the drilling costs in the ball if you buy from him...but for a high performance line ball most are $250-$280 + Tax. Thats just crazy and why I don't give him any business.

Well, it depends on where you go in NorthEast Lake County IL. The cheapest for a drill on a blank, $30 and the highest $65. Both prices are with inserts and slugs included. The guy i goto now will take any ball you have and work on it no questions asked and this is the guy that charges everyone new or not $30. Plug and redrill with this same guy, $25. If your one of his friends you got better deals, thank god i get a break as im one of his friends.

So to review, $30-$65 in my area. 1 guy takes anything for bussiness the guy that charges $65 will not drill anything unless its NIB sold by him, he doesnt even plug and redrill.

Does the pro.....layout the ball.  Watch you bowl and fiure out what will best for you on the lane condition you are intending to use the ball on?  Measure your PAP?
Take the ball out after drilling and throw some so you know it fits right and comes off fine?

If you say yes to all......$25-$35 ain't enough money.

If you want three holes punched and you tell the driller where you want 'em and you take all responsibilty for your screw ups in layout/PAP, etc. then yes fine $25-$35 is enough.

As always you get what you pay for!

Thats all stuff that I could care less about.. I already know all that before I go in there..

There are also very few (if any) shops that do any of that for anyone anymore..

Like I said, its all personal preference..

The guy i goto that charges me $30 watches me throw a few, checks my PAP every 2-3 months, all that and doesnt charge anymore, he feels that hes ripping off people, he doesnt run a proshop for the money as it is his main income but he does it mainly for a hobby.

The guy I go to charges 60.00 to drill a blank ball.  After reviewing his prices, he makes it the same price for someone if you buy it online, and then he charges drilling, or if you come into the shop, buy one from him, and drilling is included.

I still buy all my stuff from him there.  He gives me a deal on some things, but I have been going there for a while.  But the base price is 60.00.  I do not think that is unreasonable, but I am not bringing in blanks to get drilled.

The difference is some of the posts I see, some people claim the owner does it for a hobby.  Well, some do it for a living and need to pay the bills and make a decent living.

I know most pro-shop oweners need to make a living and thats their main reason on charging $50-$60 per ball blank drilled. I dont have a real problem with that, they are doing what they have to do in this world. The only pro-shops i dont like are the ones that have bad attitudes or wont work with ya.

The guy I go to chagres me $49 for drilling with a slug and inserts.  That's if I get the ball offline.  So you figure pay around 100-120 for the ball add the 20 shipping and the 49 for drilling you're paying $189 or $190 for a ball that would cost me $210 at his shop....is the $20 worth it.....sometimes.

I used to go to a place right down the street from me cuz he never asked any questions, just punched the ball up, but as I looked into what I had drilled by him....the X-hole was always messed up.  It had huge ridges like the drill went in at a crazy angle or something.  Not sure how much that would affect things, but it could, and the balls always seemed to feel different from him.

I want to find a new driller because of an incident I had over a replacement ball, and most likely I will.  I have been told about 2 different pro shops that drill the equipment of the big boys out here in the GDBA and they do a heck of a job.

Only problem is they're both a million miles away from me

I would love to learn how to drill my own stuff....think of the money I would save then....get a ball offline...buy the inserts and thumb slugs offline for what...$5 total....I'd be looking at a price of like $110 for high end stuff...can't beat that.
