how do you bowl a wall shot?
« on: October 04, 2017, 12:33:15 PM »
Seriously, I can't bowl on a true wall shot. This happened before. One year my sport league average for 3 patterns were the same has my league average on a wall shot - 202.

For ten years or so, I bowled at house that can be very easy or moderate. Lately, it's been easy with the Kegel walker machine. (The old summit/wick machine had issues) It's a 40' without a defined wall, up 10 or swing to 8/7 are the area for good carry. Going outside of that, the ball comes in very late or not at all.

This new place I"m bowling has so much friction on the outside, transition is fast and bigger moves. The same two balls I carry, have very quick response and I've left so many back row pins. 9's 8's and 7's mostly, I'm right handed. 4 pins are a plenty and so are splits.

I may need to get a smooth roller to go with my shiny stuff.... little rant over.

As I was reading your post I was going to suggest a smooth/control type ball, i.e. IQ Tour Solid or Hustle INK, but the last line of your post shows you were already thinking the same thing.

A strong urethane like The Crow or the Hot Cell might be an option as well as long as its not a flood in the middle.

who makes the crow? Sorry I don't follow ball production like I used to. I promise myself not to own no more than 6 balls. With 2.5 leagues and 4 to 6 tournaments a year, that's suffice.

(I got rid of the LT48, going to trash a solid ball due to cracking, and another ball will find itself on the ball rack. So I have room for two balls, actually one more ball. Just got an EBI ball this week.)

Visionary.  They make the best urethane imo (came out of ashes of Faball).  I have this ball and I love it.  Can handle house shot no problem even with my lower revs.  Watch the demo video on that page to see how nasty it can be for someone with decent revs.  That said if you are trying to keep your arsenal fairly small the IQ Tour or Venom Shock solid reactive balls might be more versatile besides just on walled shots.  Both are good for sports shots as well.  IQ Tour offers a little bit more control but carry can be lacking at times depending on your style.

Urethane will work if you have oil in the heads. Another option is a resin ball with a shorter pin to pap. I still think a Boost Solid with the pin 2 inches from pap would smooth out almost anything.

The Crow looks nice... it's funny, before seeing these replies, I thought about Venom shock (sale on buddies) and having a shorter pin from my favorite 4" pin...

I've seen many medium low end balls, haywire, venom, vibe, match, tank rampage, black hammer, and a tag.....at this league

Blue Vibe, Venom, maybe the tank (got a blue hammer in the garage)....add dooms suggestion Boost solid.

Never had a short pin layout, but an old BR veteran/friend who I've talked to last tourney mentioned I"m missing a solid ball with a short pin..... got to give it a try... this layout.

If you can still finda roto grip hectic, that would benefit you as well. Smooth and predictable motion through the pin deck.

I have the same issues here.  I have finally learned to play them in one of two ways.  I use a pin down Rocket ship outside the 8 board, staying straight up the back of the ball.  The other option is more of a skid flip ball, that I throw inside, never letting the ball get outside of the 12.  Basically, I try to stay away from the wall, because it causes a real uncontrollable reaction.

Not saying it won't work, but I usually try to stay away from weaker drillings on weak cores. Boost solid suggested by Doom has a 0.043 differential which isn't really weak whereas the !Q Tour has a 0.029 and the Venom Shock has a 0.034.

If you can average 200 on sport patterns you can play the game.  The trick for you should be carry, as you should be able to consistently hit the pocket with any ball in your bag on a house shot.  Usually tweeners have the most trouble carrying consistently on house walls.

I don't think there is one sure answer.  I have had good luck playing out with urethane on some house shots but it is often problematic whether it works for more than a game or two.  No sure answer when I move in either.  It often depends on the length of the pattern.  I like to use strong pearls when I move in.  Also targeting longer while bringing my break point in sometimes helps.  The big problem for tweeners, especially lower speed guys is out hooking your rev rate which is a recipe for flat 10s.  The other issue which may be causing you problems is not following the oil in fast enough.  Most lanes are getting older, and modern balls blow up the heads so fast that you can get caught behind the move very easy.  Also, on a house shot a person often thinks they just made a bad shot if they go high after two or three in the pocket.  Many times you should still move even if you didn't make a great shot.

Finally even house shots don't always match up great for everyone and it can be frustrating to get out averaged by 15 or more per game when you are hitting the pocket as good as anyone.

I understand the frustrations encountered on a wall shot.  I can honestly say that I averaged the same in my sport/challenge league as I did in my last wall shot league until I figured it out.

Use the ramp in the middle !!!  Do everything you can to be the furthest inside.  Use the strongest ball the lane surface will allow and have it drilled for length (35x4x80) something like that with NO HOLE.  Feed it out to the dry @8/10 and watch them scatter.

The combination of a strong cover WITH SURFACE and a length drilling was the magic bullet for me.
