Harder to Visualize Dual Angle Layout Description
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:40:13 PM »
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem or not but I have a hard time relating to a layout described using the dual angle method. I drill my own stuff and have practiced laying out balls using the dual angle method. It's not hard to do as Mo has described it very well, but I have a much easier time picturing the layout in a review if it's given the old way. Maybe I should do some layouts using the DA method then take measurements in inches of where the mb is and the height of the pin in relation to the mid-line. Make a little reference chart to look at. Well anyway, just wondering if anyone else has this problem.

So many questions, so little time but I''m having fun.

Yup, but it could easily be solved by including a statement like, "The layout is 60 x 4" x 65, which resulted with the pin over ring and the MB slightly below and to the right of the thumbhole about 2."

Though technically speaking it really doesn't help to describe what the layout "looks like", because the location of the pin and MB to the holes varies from player to player using identical layouts because their paps are not the same...

I enjoy it and for the average joe IMO it is MUCH easier to understand dual angle.... the first number as described to me tells the length higher this number the longer the ball should go and the last number tells how fast it will rev up seems to me much easier to choose what I need....

We have switched to using DA this season for drilling our balls.  I find it a whole lot easier to get an idea from the customer what they are looking for.

I have made a little visual page we have on our counter that allows them to decide their own layout (with help of course). As poster above said its much easier to understand DA.  Especially when your someone who doesn't know anything about ball dynamics.  This visual page REALLY has helped our customers.

I also found out by using this balls laid out 60x40 or any smoother and I would have an even rolling ball(put that ball into an early roll) I found ideal numbers for a backend that is still controllable but decently sharp is 75-80x 30-40 anything other then that and I get it to roll early and smooth and I havent tried beyond those numbers yet and feel there really is no need....

One of the things Mo talked about at the seminar he introduced the DA layout was everong has a "sweet" number. He told us to our favorite ball/ball reaction. Map it out and get the "numbers". Add the 2 together and your sweet uber is the total. totals withing 15 either way should give toy the best reaction.

Smaller angle sums should always be used for:

    * Speed dominant players
    * Higher axis tilt players
    * Longer oil patterns
    * Higher volumes of oil on the lane

Larger angle sums should always be used for:

    * Rev dominant players
    * Lower axis tilt players
    * Shorter oil patterns
    * Lower volumes of oil on the lane

Medium angle sums should always be used for players whose ball speed and rev rate match.
