Length, length, and more length possibly needed
« on: October 24, 2016, 12:34:50 PM »
I'm thinking I need a ball that gets more length before it starts hooking. My Forza hooks too early, to the point I can't keep it from going heavy. My sanded ride is a great benchmark for me right now so I hate to change the surface. I'm wondering if a mid strength ball with a ton of length would hook up late enough but generate enough angle to carry the corners on my current shot. Thoughts? Possible balls to consider? Really looking at a street fight, but I haven't seen one in action yet

I would think with all things equal, a Joyride will be a little stronger than the Ride.  The shape would also be more skid/snap than the Ride.

I think to stay far enough away from the ball return, you might be stuck with a Joyride/Ride or Tropical Storm (Breeze).

I definitely do not miss the days of above ground ball returns.  At least for me the place I bowled had 44 feet of oil and the strongest ball I had was a Black Angle; just piped it up between 5-10.  Ten pins were tricky for sure.

I have the Motiv Freestyle and it goes long.  When I want a ball to go long this is what I pick.

If you really don't want to go deeper and I understand why you can't from my own game. The Fanatic might work should be longer and more backend than the sanded Ride maybe that's tough. I really would consider the Tropical, Rhino, or Fanatic BTU. If I wanted a ball that's less go with the three above if you want a little more length I'd be willing to try the Fanatic with a length layout. Mines been great and I bowl on similar conditions with less speed than you.

I'm a Brunswick guy and I am going to talk you out of the BTU.  Its a great ball that is designed to traction early and give a smooth reaction to friction (like a jacked up urethane ball).  Your pocket % may be fine as it doesn't cover a lot of boards, but I think that a ball with more length will result in better carry.

What you are looking for is a ball with cleaner cover to clear the fronts and a med/smaller core with a weaker layout (pin 5"+ from axis).  The safe play is to go with a Rhino or Strike King as both have covers and cores that will give you more length than the Ride, just make sure to keep the polish on them so that they don't overlap with your Ride.  If you really want a ball that has a bit more of a core, then the LT48 or DV8 Freakshow are 2 of my favorite options for dry lanes.

I have the BTU and as Brandon said it is more traction early and a calmer backend. But, I will say something that agrees with what he thinks you need, but in a different way. I put a big shine on my BTU and it went longer and had more pop at the pins than the box finish. I'm not sure the impact is as much as a pearl reactive, but more than enough to carry strikes. It's a solid cover and but it doesn't squirt and has a stronger but controllable finish when shined!

Box finish and shine? What does that mean?  I just laid out that I shined my BTU and found it went long down the lane, did not create a hard to read break point, and had more pop at the pins than at box finish. Box finish was matte. What about that was hard for you to understand?

Tropical storm looks good too. I tend to like the way hybrids roll for me over pearls, so would I be fine with the hybrid one, or should I get the pearl?

Well, suppose could of put it simpler. All I was wondering was if you changed factory surface any before polishing? Didn't mean to make things complicated, sorry. I have a BTU used it some at box (factory finish). I wanted this ball for a replacement for my MOholed Natural. Presently I have BTU at 4000, at this it's stronger than Nat'l, but like it so far.

Explain your reasoning on why moving right will help with length?
