Lane Courtesy Rules
« on: October 28, 2007, 07:49:37 AM »
I was under the impression that there used to be a Lane Courtesy rule in the USBC rule.  I cannot find it.  Am I blind????

I don't recall any USBC lane courtesy rule.  Most leagues and tournaments put the lane courtesy in their rules.  Most leagues in this area put in a 1 lane courtesy.

I think it is more of an unwritten rule of thumb type of thing. Basically everyone acknowledges that you give one lane each way as respect to that bowler.

There is/was a rule in the usbc book. I read it when I last read the book back in 05. The lane rule was that you are to only give a 1 lane courtesy under the usbc rules. It also stated that any over amount can be cause for displinary action because of the slowing down of a league or tournament.

As for what was in the book about lane courtesy. It was in the part call "What is The Answer"(now its called the "Commonly Asked Questions"CAQ's) back in the 04-05 book. Its Under Etiquette Information it wasnt in the rules section. This is what it said.-

Observe one lane courtesy. The bowler on the right should bowl if both reach the approach at the
same time. Stay off the approach while you wait.

It wasnt a rule just a courtesy thing.

Heres the whole thing
-----------------------------
Etiquette Information
Here are a few simple guidelines to help make your bowling experience more pleasurable.
Be ready to bowl when the pins are set. Do not bowl until the pinsetting machine has completed its
cycle and the sweepbar is raised, otherwise you may damage the ball or machine.
Do not use another player’s ball without their permission.
Do not take too long to aim or get set up when you are on the approach.
Stay on your approach while delivering the ball. Return to the settee area after making each delivery.
Observe one lane courtesy. The bowler on the right should bowl if both reach the approach at the
same time. Stay off the approach while you wait.
Good bowling requires concentration. Bowlers should always keep in mind that when others are
preparing to bowl, excessive movement or noise could be distracting. When a player is ready to
bowl, give them the courtesy of making their shot without interference, as you will want the same
courtesy when it is your turn.
Excessive “lofting” hurts your game and damages the lane.
Refrain from using abusive language or obscene gestures.
Play the game to win, but be a gracious loser.
Remember, good sportsmanship is always the key to a successful game.

I knew it was in there somewhere, and then under rule 11 I belive, going over that amount can cause for rule 11 to come into play

Theres courtesy and then there is a lady who bowls in my league who we bowled against tonight. Talk about slowing the game up. Getting focused is one thing and I'm not mad at her for being slow but she was taking alomost a min to shoot at splits that everyone including herself knew she would miss. It was ridiculous. The people two lanes over were complaining. I was impatient but I didn't say anything it just was a long night waiting on her.

From my understanding there is no rule stating how long you have once on the approach...correct me if I'm wrong?

A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles per year.
Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

No your right but if you seen the amount of time she spent up there and the results she was getting.I'm not putting down her game, I just wished she didn't take as long. If she was shooting the lights out I wouldn't have said a word and i'm sure neither would anyone else but she was shooting 80's and 90's. I just didn't think it should take that long to shoot that kind of score.

Ohh don't take my first post wrong way...Every league has at least one "Human Rain Delay"
There should be something put in place so a person doesn't grab their ball, then stand on the approach and shimmy/wiggle for 2 minutes on every ball...no matter how good/bad/old/young they are even if they are staring down at the 7-10

There are no "rules" for common courtesy in anyone's rule book but there is such a thing as respect for another person or people.

When people pick up their ball and wait and wait and wait for the person next to them to go, before they step up on the approach, then something is wrong.

Jokes about timing someone by the phases of the moon get to be wearying and the people causing those jokes can be oppressive. Yes, there are no "RULES" per se, there's just humanity and consideration for others.
