Local association All-Star team qualifications
« on: June 16, 2017, 11:30:30 AM »
What do some of your All-Star teams have for qualifications as to who is selected?  Our city only has a handful of houses now and they are all pretty easy.  One house does give up more honor scores than the others per the number of bowlers.  When people match up for a night, it's really good there.  Here's our qualifiers and points system:

Must be association member
Must bowl at least 2 leagues
Must bowl in at least 2 centers or 1 travel league plus 1 standard league
Highest average from each center and travel league used
Averages must be minimum of 64 games per league

Points:
-Highest average from each center(s) or travel league used to determine base points.  Ex. League 1 avg + league 2 avg = total points/2 = base points
-800 series
--6 points for 1st in center
--4 points for each consecutive in center
300 game
--4 points for 1st in center
--3 points for each consecutive in center
299 game
--2 points each
298 game
--1 point each
Annual city tournament
-scratch singles
--1st place = 5 points
--2nd place = 3 points
--3rd place = 1 point
-scratch all-events
--1st place = 7 points
--2nd place = 5 points
--3rd place = 3 points

Ex.  I average 220 in house A and 230 in house B, then my base is 225.  Then I had 2-800's in house B (6+4 points) + 1-300's at house A (4 points) + 3-300's at house B (4+3+3 points) + 3rd place singles at city tournament (1 point) = total points of 250.  This example would be borderline of making team of 6 for men's side, but most years would be in.

How much emphasis would you put on city tournament vs honor scores vs league averages?  Do you like the rule forcing 2 different centers for league average base points?  Would you add more points/places to city tournament to hopefully increase participation?

Personally, I'm always a little short mainly due to lack of honor scores.  I've looked the few times I bowled in 2 leagues and would have higher composite average than a few on the team, but not by enough.  My worst example was averaging around 235 with only a 299.  Lots of series right around 700.

For my area each city association puts together a few all star teams (men, women, seniors, etc.) and they bowl against each other a couple of times in each city their paired against. Other than that I'm not sure what the point is besides keeping a tradition going.

Highest combined average of(at least) two USBC certified leagues in the local association.

As for what's the point of an all star team, it's recognition for bowlers who performed well during that season. Consider it a season long tournament with the "Captain" of the All Star team winning first place and the others as runner-ups.

At least that's what it is in our local association.

In an old association i used to bowl in, they had a King and Queen court where throughout the year you accumulate points like above. It was an honor back in the day to make the court but these days im not so sure.

In all the years I've been bowling, I've never seen or heard of a association or house all-star team of any kind.

That sounds like a something from back in the day of team shirts, banquets and bowling for trophies.

Like on "All in the Family" when Archie went to tryout and get picked for the local championship team after waiting six years for a vacancy on the team.

It's "current day" for my local association. We have an association banquet every year.  A good friend of mine was being inducted into our local Hall Of Fame, so I was there this year. The HoF induction takes place at the banquet, as well as the announcement of the All Star teams, and the winners of the Association tournament Team, Doubles, Singles and All Events receive their Eagle at the banquet as well.

I know there will be a lot of crap spewed by a few on here about how this is all so uncool and no one wants it, but it was nice actually. I enjoyed it and obviously others in our association do as well since there were over 150 people there.

I'm glad our local association maintains the "old school" approach to bowling.

ksucat, there  looks to be way to much emphasis on honor scores. The City Championships should carry much more weight in the point system.

Under the points earned you provided, bowling 2 300 s gets you 7 points, as is winning the all events scratch. So ask any scratch bowler what would mean more to them, personally?Case closed lol.

They should also add points for your state and national tournament performances IMHO.

We had an all city team in the late 60s but nothing for the last 45 years.  We did have a long running local scratch association that selected an alllstar team but it folded 10 years ago.

We have an All City Team.  There are points awarded for 300 games, 800 series, averages, local tournament finishes, state tournament finishes and national tournament finishes.  There is a maximum amount of points awarded for honor scores and bowling centers.  To be eligible for our local hall of fame, you must have been on at least one all city team.

I'm in the same association as ksucat.

While I understand the requirement to bowl in more than one house, but I know of at least one instance where a bowler who should be on the team is not simply because he bowls only on one league.

This person has won 3 times on tour including a US Open and now runs a proshop in town. His shop schedule makes it nearly impossible to bowl in multiple leagues and keep up with his two teenage sons.

I don't know if anyone would dispute that he is one of the best in town if not the best but he can't win bowler of the year.

Those accomplishments should put him in the local hall of fame, but not on the yearly all star team.  The all star team is recognizing bowlers yearly accomplishments.
