Looking for a new arsenal ...
« on: April 13, 2015, 01:35:20 AM »
....for my 15 year old daughter. She only throws 12# but I'm moving her up to 13, hoping for heavy 13. She says she good with the 12#'s but it's about that time for her to move up. Her ball speed is slow and more controlled, maybe 11mph on a good day.

Her current 3 ball arsenal is a FreakNFrantic,, a Shout, and a white dot.   The white dot is automatic, so looking for 2 more balls that complement each other. With her slow speed, not looking at the big oiler balls, but more mid range to low end.

Any suggestions for a good 1-2 punch?  I'm thinking Rocket and Ride.

Radical uses the same core design in each line in all available weights. Like most companies you will get slight differences in the RG factors but the core design in each Radical line will be the same from weight to weight.

Didnt know that! nice to hear it
Motiv Paranoia 40*4*55
Motiv Jackal Carnage 40*4*55
Hammer BWRLS 50*4*55
RG Haywire 40*3.5*50
Storm Rocket 4.5*4*2
Motiv Burn 50*5*40
Motiv Tag 50*5*40
RG Devour 55*5.5*60
Motiv Venom Shock 45*3 3/4*35

PAP 4 3/4" left 1/2 up
Revs: 400.     Ball Speed: 16 mph

I'm reviving this thread because I still didn't decide what to get my daughter for her 1-2 punch.

Again, the reason for the balls is because I'm going up to 13# from 12#.

Been hearing a LOT of great stuff about the Motiv Tag.  My initial choice was the Rocket and Ride, but I hardly hear anything about those balls now.

So if I go Tag, (her ball speed is only 10mph, and her strong ball is a FreakNFrantic) do you guys think this is strong enough as her first ball?  How about a Ascent or a Rebel Tank as her step down!  (Replacing a Shout). Which one, or something else?

Looking at making the purchase within the next week or 2.

With the Freak'n Frantic, the closest to that would likely be either the Tribal Fire or the Tag, so you are in the ballpark with having something similar.  With slower speed, the Tag could potentially fit the bill here and may be better.  The Tag uses a solid cover but is designed to be very clean up front and saves its energy for the backend.  Of course, the cover can be adjusted as needed.

If she needs something stronger to go up from the Tag, go with the Venom Shock.  This is one of the most versatile balls in the Motiv lineup and works well on many different patterns.

The Forza is going to probably be a bit too strong with her speed at this point.  It's a great benchmark ball but would likely be overkill for the time being.

I've found Motiv to have great covers.  For example, I have a Covert Revolt as my medium-heavy ball and used it a lot this past season along with my Sigma Sting.  The covers hardly soaked up any oil.  This is in contrast to my Storm/Roto stuff which absorbs a lot more oil in the covers.  They also take surface changes well.

The one thing to give a heads up on is that Motiv overall tends to be a bit smoother than Storm/Roto.  Therefore, you may need to slightly adjust layouts.  But, they are more similar to Storm/Roto in overall reaction compared to other brands.  Personally, I find their line to be a bit more versatile too and not have as much niche type reactions.  Overall, they make great stuff and they're only getting better.

Do you guys think a Storm Ride would be a good ball down from the Tag?  The reason I am asking is because I won one, but it's 14#, and it's too heavy for her. If I can trade it at the shop for a 13#, should I go that route?  Either that, or I can go 15 and use it myself and get her something that compliments the Tag better.

Took my daughter to the shop today and the operator said he's not bringing in any Motiv balls for now, so I told him what I was planning and asked about a few balls.  He recommended the Radical Rack Attack or the Soul/Soul Mate.  We chose the Radicals but he recommended jumping to 14# instead of 13#. I was a bit concerned about that but agreed. The first game, trying to get used to the weight, she was dropping the ball and had a hard time controlling her aiming. Shot 119 with the solid. (The pearl was still being drilled)
Then things started to click. By the middle of the second game, the pearl was dropped off at the lane.  We could clearly see the difference in the two balls.  The solid was more archy, more heavier rolling.  The pearl went longer with a very nice, more defined left turn. They both hit hard and continuous.
By the third game, she was in love with these balls, shooting in the 190's. She loved the shape and control of the Rack Attacks, and she's glad she made the jump to 14's. Thanks everyone for input.
