Magnesium Pins

Has any one bowled against them?

I bowled in a tourny this last weekend that had these in and on top of that, it was a sport shot. There were 50 or 60 bowlers counting re entries, and there were only 3 or 4 people that were plus for 6 games. I think plus 28 was high qualifier. I qualified at -136 and was 14th but due to reentries and no shows got to bowl in the finals. Took top ten.

Any how, they make the most peculiar sound when you hit them. Kind of a ping. Sort of like the sound an aluminum bat makes when you hit a ball. They are also quite dead. In fact, someone actually got a messenger and a roar went up from the crowd as it only happened once. I heard rumors of a second one but can't confirm.

I wonder how much of the scoring pace was due to the pins or the sport shot? It seemed that you really had to hit the pocket solid with great roll or they would not fall. A double was good a 3 bagger was better and more was exceptional. Spares were crucial because you could not strike your way out of an open. Splits were common as you had to hit flush to high flush and the transitions were not forgiving because the 4 would not trip or it would stand with the 10. Move early and it was 2 8 10 .

Oh, the field was as strong as my rural area can field as some folks came out of Nebraska such as Tom Kelly Jr and SR, Tony Manna, Rich Abboud, and Jay Watts(he won). There was a Very good lefty that made the matchplay in Omaha when the PBA was there also but I can't remember his name. Don Breeden was also there. Maybe the names don't mean much but I would consider them a threat to win any event they enter.

Bones, somehow I knew the resident sage would have seen them

I have only seen and bowled on them this one time but actually beleive they are a match for the high powered balls and conditions of today. It would be interesting to try them on THS.

I crossed with Tom Kelly SR. He is an older gentleman and would hate to hazard a guess as to his age, but he was grinning from ear to ear. The tournament director came over and asked Tom what he thought of the situation and he stated that it was perfect and to not change a thing.

Bones,
That was exactly what I was thinking. It was difficult to "hit them light and watch them fight" to carry. The ball had to be in the pocket with good roll to carry. Wall shot tens or trip fours were rare. In essence, you got what you deserved. The only thing I can not speak to is how they would react to THS. The sport pattern alone was fairly difficult and can be an equalizer even with the modern pins. I just think you will get what you deserve with the mag pins.

Sukie  That may be him but I am not sure. I am horrible with names but could pick him out of a crowd. I have only seen him twice, once here and once at a tourney in Soiux Falls. He is a bigger guy and rather unexcitable. It was a pleasure to cross with him.

Fireguy,
I do agree with you, times change and technology marches on. The pins just did not fly like the modern pins and those that tried to hit the pocket light shot tens or 2 8 10's all day. Messengers were unheard of. On a shot like what we were on, many would have picked up the speed and tried to get pins going side to side to carry but with the pins being dead, it just would not happen. Ball speed did not seem to matter, but the angle and roll you had mattered much more.

Actually, I will bowl in any environment placed before me. High scoring or grind out, everyone is bowling on the same condition.

If mag pins were adopted, I do not know how or if it would change the game but any change has its unintended consequences that remain unforeseen until they happen. My initial feeling is that you would get what you deserve according to execution.
