How much does drilling cost in your loc pro shops
« on: March 18, 2006, 02:50:36 AM »
Is the drilling incuded in the price of the ball or no?

If not, how much does it cost?

I'm wondering at a paticular new pro shop near me charging 50 dollars to drill plus 15 for a slug =65$ is a little excessive? Luckily I don't have finger inserts. I don't remember paying anything close to this high before.

I have ala carte or undrilled pricing in my shop.  Drilling is the same whether you buy the ball from me or not.  Only about 5-10% of the balls that I drill are brought in.

$40 for drilling, grips are $7, slugs are $8, plus tax.  Seriously considering raising my prices.  Supply and demand.  I have about 40 balls on my work log right now, these 16 hour days are getting long.

I do watch customers bowl whenever lanes are available, I do coaching and lessons, I want to help them bowl better.  My time is money.

And, unlike BOWL keeps stressing about being an online shop.  I am a physical location inside a bowling center, that has rent, phone, insurance, corporate taxes (I am incorporated).  Along with storage unit, CPA, and the myriad of people wanting donations and such.  I give 10% off for people that bowl leagues in my center.

$50-$60 is NOT too much for the service that I provide.  Surface adjustments, grip adjustments, tips on physical game, etc....  Add to the fact that I have 3 Pug Dogs and am funny as hell!!!  LOL!!!

Anyway, if a guy can get higher prices, don't begrudge him, don't talk about him behind his back and cut him to the bone.  Shop somewhere else.  If he/she is providing enough service for the money charged, then he is doing something right.

Do you people go to the discount lazer vision surgeon?  The discount plastic surgeon for bigger boobs?  When your car is dead in the water, do you haggle with your mechanic??  I and others provide a service that not everyone can do.  Not many do it as well as I do, I should be paid accordingly.  I am not ripping anyone off.

Let the flames begin!

I know a pro shop owner that includes drilling in the price of the ball. for example, if i were to buy a Track Solution PP off of his shelf, it would be about $140, b/c the ball is worth about 100 online, and he charges $40 for the drilling. Anything else is extra.  he does this to compete with all the online sites.

And for anyone to know, just fyi, buying balls online will not really save you any money. I know, i tried it. Buying a ball cheap online, will still include shipping, and drilling, plus anything else you want.

I know... i tried to save money this way... lol... didn't work!!

Its $50 if you bring in a blank to my pro shop.  Thats close to what they make on a new ball.  Slugs and grips are extra.  This pro shop has a very knowledgeable staff and all my equipment fits the same.
They also carry the Grip-Loc removeable thumbs.

Mike Austin great comments.  When I asked for "real" opinions for "real" pro shop operators I forgot about you...

Thanks for the honest thoughts.  I couldn't agree more and I am NOT a pro shop operator.  But, I go to one in my area who is bar none the most knowledgeable and been in business for over 25 years.

I am also a pro clubmaker with 20 years of experience, knowledge and the tools to go with it.   Every cut n' glue hack can build a set of irons but can they fit the irons correctly so the player can get the most out of them?  So, many fitting issues in golf are much the same in bowling.

Well said Mike.

the regular prices at my shop are 40 blank 15 for slug and 10 for grips, if you buy the ball there Im sure its a little less. but when I go there I get some crazy deals. I got a full plug and redrill with grips and slug and a nother ball new grips and slug and surface ajustments all for 15 bucks. I dont think I payed anything near full price for about a year.

and by the way by my shop I dont mean Im the owner I mean the shop I go to.

My pro shop charges me 60 to drill an internet ball. The time he spends with me discussing my game and next ball purchase means a lot. He also does not warranty it if he does not sell it. So I guess it is worth a little extra for peace of mind.

Bring your own ball and it's $50 plus $3.50/each for inserts, and $10 for slug.

Drilling is free if you buy the ball - prices for inserts and slug are the same.

Plug and re-drill is around $40 for 3 holes - not sure why that is cheaper????

Either way, for anything other than the highest priced balls, it's about the same cost whether you buy it from him or get it on-line and pay to have it drilled.

He doesn't care either way - he's probably making more money just off the drilling without the hassle of ordering.

We charge 25 to drill a plastic ball, 35 to drill a urethane ball and 45 to drill a reactive/particle ball.

The theory is that the better balls take more knowledge to lay out and drill than a spare ball.

I'm special.  My driller charges me anywhere from $0 to $20 to drill a ball that I bring him (including plugwork).  Nothing for what I buy from him.  I've no idea what others pay and I don't want to ask.

At my shop, this was the first year I was in the bowling alley (freestanding before) and thus kept my prices in line with the old owners so not to shock everyone and get whatever I can get out. I charge $25 for drilling including a free game and help on lanes, lifetime cleans, polishes, and sanding for free, grips are an extra $5 for the set, and $5 for the slug....so the most out the door with me is $35...however, next year it will be $35 for drilling, $5 for set of grips, and $10 for the slug...

Equipment bought in the shop includes drilling (extra $8 each for grips and/or thumb slug).  Prices range around $200 to $250 for high end stuff and around $160 to $180 for mid-line stuff.  Blank resin/particle balls that are brought into the shop are charged $50 to drill plus grrps/slug.  Blank plastic/urethane balls are $25 plus grips & slug.  Our shop offers a 15% discount to all league bowlers on everything.  I "part-time" there, so I do my own work and am charged for materials only.

As far as driving business away with drilling blank equipment, its not the case in our area.  We have three places to have equipment drilled within an hrs drive.  One guy does it in his garage and it costs $40 + tax.  A second place charges around the same, but it takes several weeks to get any work done.  Finally, our place charges a little extra, but its walk-in and 30 minutes, done.  We do fitting, layouts, analysis, etc.  We take time to locate the bowlers PAP (as opposed to the other places who just put holes in the balls).

Good god@$&*!! i pay 30 bucks for a plug and a redrill, new stuff complimentary drill, pay for the slug.  Had one drilled brand new once, didnt like the layout took it back he pulled a brand new ball off the rack and tried something different.  I guess a good proshop is hard to find.

quote:
Our shop charges $50 for a blank drill you bought elsewhere, no matter where it was. $10 for a pair of finger inserts and $15 for a thumb slug.

They may give a small discount for repeat customers or at the owners discretion.

If you buy the ball from the shop, drilling is complimentary, but you will pay a higher retail price for the ball. They generally try to charge enough for services that it makes it about the same "out-the-door" price for the customer.

By doing this, they make the same amount of profit whether or not they actually had to "handle" the ball or not. (by handle, I mean they didn't have to order it or pay for the shipping, they let you go to that trouble yourself)

This is the main reason I have gone to buying mostly single drill, used equipment. I can buy a ball that normally sells for $150-$200 N.I.B. for around $50 and then spend only $15 having the thumb plugged and re-drilled. Voila, $200 worth of ball for around $65-$75.
