Med/Hvy ball to start tourney arsenal...what options?
« on: September 30, 2014, 11:12:32 AM »
Ok...I have a Ebonite Cyclone and Roto Grip Scream to take care of my THS in this area. So that is covered.

So, now for a guy that is a stroker and probably will attack most tourney conditions straight up, need ideas for under 40 ft and over 40 ft. patterns I might see.

So give me 2 balls for those conditions that I will guess would be med/hvy.

I am a stroker who bowls predominantly straight up and I bowled in a WTBA sport shot league this summer and started the first half out terribly with a 6 ball arsenal...I slimmed it down to an IQ Tour Solid and a Zero Gravity and my average for the 2nd half shot up 20 pins.  I used the IQ Tour Solid on the short and medium patterns and used the Zero Gravity on the longer patterns mostly, with some mixing and matching depending on transition.

The IQ Tour Solid is the quintessential benchmark ball.  It will not scream off the dry of short patterns and it still has teeth to make the turn on medium patterns when playing the right area on the lanes.  The Zero Gravity has a strong solid cover with teeth and a high RG core for energy retention making it a good choice on longer patterns.  I think both of those balls would be good additions to the Cyclone and Scream without overlapping either.

Motiv Covert Revolt and the Sigma Sting.  These 2 are great for what you're looking for.

The Covert Revolt handles medium-heavy oil really well and works well regardless if you like to play straighter (like myself) or if you like to crank it.  The arc motion is very predictable and it does not quit in back.  It's easily one of the hardest hitting and most continuous balls that I've seen in a while.  If you're familiar with the Game Breaker/Game Breaker 2, the motion is very similar.  Even though it has a lower RG symmetrical core (around 2.47), it retains energy very well and doesn't seem to die out.  I use this a lot on longer patterns (43') with some heavier volume and it does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Then on medium patterns (38-40 ft or carrydown on longer patterns), I love using my Sigma Sting.  It's also my benchmark ball.  On carrydown or true medium patterns, it's very tough to beat the core/pearl cover combo that you find here.  It's a great choice for playing straighter and I have also been successful opening up the lanes with it.  The Sigma Sting is not overly angular, but gives a great combo of length and backend that is hard to beat.  In fact, the ball is so good that I consider it one of the best balls ever made by any manufacturer and it allowed me to finally retire my Hy-Road.

I second the IQ solid, and would add the Optimus.  The goal on tournament patterns is not to find a way to open the lanes up like a house shot, but rather find a way to the pocket consistently.  Even a tournament pattern will open up quickly enough.  I like the above mentioned balls because they are symetricals and less likely go quickly side ways coming off the end of the oil.
