Need assistance w. slide
on: March 18, 2017, 10:23:06 AM
I know that it is not possible to make complete accurate recommendations, given I have no videos here, however, I wanted to get some suggestions.

I am 6'3, and slide deeply. This ends up making my knee (left) feel as if it's going to tear. Any ideas on how take some of the pressure off? I typically have a knee brace, but it's not exactly helping.

when you say slide deeply, do you mean that your slide is more like you're doing a leg lunge?

I can share in your knee pain. 6'-3 and 275lb
I have gone back to trying to get my fundamentals better.
Think of it like this- standing on the approach,  It's like going for a walk in the park with a bowling ball in your hand.
It's nice and easy, walking while swinging the ball with no muscle and an even keel slide
i'm getting better at being soft at the release and it stems form better fundamentals, i have noticed that I tended to "stomp" my feet a little before this and had a bit of a "power' position at the foul line which led me to a forced slide and put alot of pressure on my knee and ankle.
Are you able to post each shot at the foul line?

If you're already wearing a brace and it still feel like you're going to tear the insides of your knee, isn't it time to see a medical doctor or have you already?

I wonder if sliding more "gently" can help that much.

Stoney,

Lunging is a great illustration for the slide.

Dave, yes. I think you hit the nail on the head. My PSO was telling me when he corrected my pitch that I slide, and stop for fear of going over the foul line, but even taking half a step back, it hasn't addressed the pressure on my knee. I actually thought it may have been weight related, so I lost 60 lbs over the last 12 weeks.....still knee issues.

I don't really think a Doc would be able to help Charlest, because I can imagine them telling me the only true way to stop, is to stop bowling, or change my entire game. I'll try and grab some shots @ league this week.

It depends on the cause of the pain.
If you stop bowling (possibly only temporarily) vs being permanently crippled, which would you choose?
Until you get a good, professional medical opinion or two, you will never know  for sure.

I had similar issues with the long slide. How's your foot position through the slide? I used to point my toe inward and that would cause a lot of sideways pressure on my knee. Shortened my approach and slide length... focused on keeping my weight in line with my leg, with no twisting pressure. No more pain.

Have a look at Josh Blanchard (who won his 3rd title yesterday)
so smooth, so little effort.
take a look at his walk, his slide, his effort

i'm gonna agree that you should seek real medical advice, but there are plenty of bowlers who do very well with little knee bend (Wes Malott after his knee surgery?)

Thx for all the replied. I managed to get a couple of shots in. Please forgive my frumpy appearance. Raced straight from work to last night of league. This is after league..was bowling in preparation for a tourney tomorrow with my co-workers.

One of the things, I noticed is how I walk. I think that's a huge contributing factor, so in these shots, i straightened my (left/sliding) leg/foot intentionally to alleviate some of the pain.
