Oval Thumb
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:08:00 PM »
Just went to an oval thumb.  First time ever.  After bowling my ring finger hurts.  Its like when I put my thumb in the ball my ring finger is pulling out.  Anyone ever go thru this.  What adjustments did you make.

Sounds like your span for that finger is too long.

Some people like a stretched span, some do not. Either way, you can easily get one too long sometimes.

Do you use finger inserts?  If so, do they have lifts on them?

Yes I do use inserts with lifts.  When i used a round thumb I had no issues.

If your span didn't change have the angle of the oval checked.  The angle could be off and you are manipulating your hand to account for it.

It depends on how the oval is cut
The upper edge of the oval has moved lengthening the ring finger length
The span should be based off that edge

It's not the round thumb. It's the measuring of the spans and angles that are wrong.

Quite a few years ago I went to an oval for my thumb. I know I had to shorten my span esp ring finger because I made all the oval cuts in upper left hand corner of my thumb. Best fit I've ever had done. Still use it.

It's all based off where the span is taken off the oval plus how tight the oval is, which minimizes any flexibility

I went to an oval thumb last season, and changed my span, due to carpal tunnel influence. I found it very helpful, especially when I added an eighth of forward pitch on the thumb with it. This allowed me to hold the ball without squeezing all the way. It is definitely worth exploring.

Depending on how the oval is drilled will alter or change the angle of the thumb hole

Make sure you have a generous bevel on the front of the hole.

Bevel should only be used for shaping NOT for release ease or comfort...if it's needed the span or angles are incorrect
