Peterson Point Leagues
« on: July 10, 2013, 10:03:07 AM »
Does anyone have the information necessary to be able to put one of these together? Bowled on almost 30 years ago and it is still the best format that I ever bowled. Our Hi/Lo Scratch is a close second, but could really use the help to perhaps start one at one of my local centers? Is there secretary programs for the Peterson?

Thanks,
Don

A point for a win and a point for every 50 pins is how we used to play back in the day.

We played where you had to beat the guy you were matched up to and it was a handicap league. You bowled for 17 points a night with each individual match being 1 point and 2 points for the team game with 2 points for team total. We had a 10 pin drop rule for averages, so your average can't drop more than 10 pins from previous year. So if you averaged 200 the year before your average for handicap purpose can't drop below 190. If it does you still get the handicap based on the 190 even if you're averaging 180. This helps to keep guys from trying to keep their average down! This was based on a three person league: so 9 points if you win all your points and 6 points for the team games and 2 points for total!

Bat,
That is a match point league.  A Peterson Point league gives points for a pre determined pin fall block in addition to points for winning matches.  Some leagues use 25, 50 or 100 pins, depending if you want more emphasis on match wins or pin fall.

Looking for Peterson or the like for something new. Thanks for the input.

We run a great league in house that has 24 bowlers in it (8 lane house). Top 8 averages are Div. A, Bottom 8 averages are Div. C, and middle 8 are Div. B. You draw blind every night for your lane and opponent. Your team for that night is the other two on your lane. 7 points per night, 3 points for your individual wins over bowler from your division, 3 points from the team wins, and 1 point for team series on the night. Scratch league and depending how you and every one else is bowling, You can float from division to division, but league pays on point money (Did you win or lose? What a coincept!). You have to have been in a division for 2/3 of the league to win division awards. Never heard of it until I joined this year.

Maybe I will suggest 25 pin blocks, with 2 points for game, 1 point for tie for a 12 week trial and see how many will sign up. My other option will be to suggest a progressive league so there are no complaints about bagging, one team is too strong, or any other nonsense that seems to come about.

The Petersen Point System is often confused with other point systems. This is because there seems to be no universally accepted definition of Peterson Bonus Points and varies between leagues or tournaments.

One definition that seems to be used most often is where a player or team receives one point for every xx number of pins scored.

Usually, You get 1 point for every "Block" of 25, 50 or 100 pins of total scratch or handicap scores. The bonus is then calculated by taking the player's or team's total scores (scratch or handicap) and dividing it by the block size.

For example, if you used a 50 pin block and bowled a 575, it would be 11 points. (575 divided by 50= 11.5, with the fraction dropped).

Another variation of the Petersen point system, is where points are awarded for each "block" of pins scored. For examples, if the "block" is defined as 50 pins, and you shoot 575, you would receive 11 Petersen points. In addition, bonus points are awarded for victories. (A variation of this is where you don't drop the fraction.)

Example if you won 2 games (out of 3) plus series and 10 points were awarded for each victory, you would receive a total of 41 points for the evening. (20 points for the 2 games and 10 for the series. 11+20+10=41)

Died: June 20, 1958
Inducted 1963

A scoring system and a bowling tournament have etched Petersen's name indelibly in the upper strata of bowling contributors. He started his famous Petersen Classic in 1921 and that event's popularity has grown each year. Petersen also originated the point system bearing his name. He also was a founder of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America in 1932 and a prime mover of high school bowling.

There's a format called "Team versus Field", this one rarely seen.
In this your team plays all the teams in the league at one time. Here you receive points (usually 1) for each team you beat in the league.

Example: If your league has 12 teams, the maximum amount of points per game you could win is 11.

This is what I have heard others call the progressive league format, I believe.
