Buying New ball. Opinions welcome!
« on: June 24, 2013, 09:28:22 PM »
As the title says I'm going to go purchase/order a new ball within the next day or so. I'm looking for something in that Medium/light category for the moment.

If you had to make a choice what would it be for you personally?

Ringer, Lights Out, Strinke King, Mutiny, Misfit, etc...

Normally I wouldn't ask, but I'm having a heck of a time making a decision lol.

The fact that you can't decide and you have a plethora of different answers should tell you that all these balls are the same and you won't notice one bit of difference on the lanes.  Buy the color that strikes your eye or the one that you can buy for the least amount of money.  They're all good.

Honestly I'd kind of second this . . all the balls will have their slight differences, but on a house shot, you really aren't going to notice with a lighter oil ball.  Hammer has a new one out called the Spike that you might add to your choices, but yeah, just pick the one that looks the best to you or from the company that you like the best.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

While there are a ton of good balls out there to choose from, I'd want a little more info about you and the type of ball you need/want before suggesting any of 30 or 40 possible selections.

I mean
A. Do you want to cover light to medium-light oil or medium-light to medium oil.? Few balls can cover light to medium.

B. Are you rev dominant or speed dominant or neutral?
If you're rev dominant, a 300C can cover medium-light to medium oil.
If you're speed dominant, that same ball will cover light to medium-light oil.

To combine A, and B above:
If you're speed dominant and want to cover medium-light to medium oil, you would want a 500 series ball.
If you're rev dominant and and want to cover light to medium-light, you might want a Brunswick Strike King or a Storm Tropical Breeze.

So, "who" are you? and what do you want/need?

I would say I'm pretty much in the middle. Speed is about average, maybe a tad on the slower side of that and revs are about average. I'm definitely not cranking it, but its not low rev, slow as molasses either. Not sure if it helps ( or matters) but I'm also a high track roller.

What I'm looking for is a ball for when a THS ( something in the medium range) breaks down or when things are a bit more on the dry side. So I guess thats more light to light-medium than medium-light to medium.

Basically right now my Medium ball is a Storm Eraser, and its great on medium patterns, but when things start drying out or are a little more dry I have a pretty big problem keeping it right. Really I need something that's a step down from that. Eventually I'm going to replace the Eraser as well, so if it overlaps a bit that's not going to be a huge problem in the long run.

Right now what I'm using for that is my old Blood Red Beast thats polished up, I just break everything down almost like throwing spares and play more down and in. Problem is if both those lines break down on me (or someone else is using the same line) I'm screwed  :-\

Not even sure one ball can cover both, I may need two different ones, but basically I need something for things are broke down, or for when I walk in a house and throw the Eraser and wish I had something else weaker heh.

My shot looks almost exactly like the guys in this video:

I need to sit down and make a video one day just so I can figure it out exactly, just always had the Pro Shop guy watch and he did the job for me  :-\

Sounds like you could use a modern urethane ball like a Super Natural.  Its a polished urethane so it will get through the fronts pretty well on lighter volumes but there is a "hint" of resin we believe to give it just a little more on the backend than a true urethane.  I would really consider stepping in that direction and get away from resin altogether for the lane condition you are describing.

TBH I thought about doing that, my wife loves the color of the Radical so we may have a winner there lol

I know its a few pages back now but just thought I would update things a bit. If I can get a hold of my pro shop guy tomorrow, I will be getting the Arson low flare.

Why you ask?

Because my pro shop is running a special, Buy a Hammer First Blood and they will give you an Arson low flare for free. Two really good balls and drilled for around  200 bucks with the grips and slugs is kind of hard to beat.

Based on your stats, I'd check out a Storm Frantic or a Roto Grip Wrecker as a step down from the Eraser.  Both balls are great hybrids and you get a ton of versatility for the money spent.

The difference between both balls are that the Frantic is going to read a tiny bit earlier in the midlane.   Roto Grip's Wrecker is known to have a bit more length while having more angle in back.

Having thrown the Frantic with the N.O.S. core and using the Rising Star (has the same Neutron core as the Wrecker), I can say both balls have excellent energy retention and great carry power with keeping the pins low.  Plus, both balls offer enough with the core/cover combos that you can use them on some heavier or longer/flatter patterns.  Both balls work very well playing straighter or if you like to wheel it.  In my case, the Frantic helped make me some good money in league brackets this year as it worked great on the burn but provided me versatility on the longer/flatter patterns we saw.  To give an example, the longer/flatter patterns would see most people breaking out their stronger stuff like the Marvel Pearl, Defiant Edge, Hell Raiser, Brick, etc.  Yes, the Frantic and Wrecker is versatile to where it can work in those situations too.

If you go with either, the Frantic will be best if you want more midlane and an even arcing motion.  The Wrecker will be best if you want more length but a defined angular backend.

Yeah I'd take that.  The Arson Low Flare is still a decently aggressive ball, but with a little polish and a weak drill you might have just what you want.

Well at this point I'm going to be purchasing a new light oi/spare ball as well. My old Ace Supreme broke out around the finger hole last night and has larger cracks in a circle around it as well.

Some how I've developed the ability ( I call it luck) to be able to break down everything and throw a reactive fairly straight if I need too, so I'm may go with something above a typical plastic ball but still not very aggressive for that. Also thought about getting the True Blood plastic ball that has the core in it and see how that works.

If you got ideas for something thats great for that I could use some idea's there as well. Thinking of maybe a Slingshot, a Scout Reactive or maybe a Super Natural, just haven't done much research on that end of things. It will be next week before I get to meet up with the Pro shop guy ( our work schedules are conflicting atm lol) so I have some time.

Buy something that you think looks cool and go with it.  Every company makes good bowling balls,  I've shot several honor scores with Ebonite, Storm, AMF, 900 Global, DV8 and Brunswick to list a few.
