When should I have my PAP checked?

if you're a new bowler, After you've bowled long enough to have developed a stable release.

If you've been bowling awhile, at least when you have you're grip checked and updated.

Yes, if you want a more precise layout.

I keep the same layout for THS for the last several seasons. 4x4x2 if I dv8 from it, then it's 5" up pin to pap.

I recently ghetto checked my pap and it looks longer than 5 1/8 and 1/2" or so higher than 1/8 up. Track still measures around 12.5 with axis rotation no longer being 65*... it looks like it's 40-45* off the hand.

I'm guessing here. so if that's the case, then my 4x4x2 layout is not really exact..... just curious. I guess my "pap" changes also when I play up the back to playing more "side rotation".....

They used to recommend checking your PAP with a plastic ball.

that's why I wasn't so sure too........ I used my Lane 1 XXXL. I don't own a true plastic ball anymore, I donated that ball few months ago. I get a good amount of Flare with this spare ball.

You never need to check your PAP location.  Your driller needs to check it so he can use it to lay out your new ball.  --  JohnP

So funny story about this subject. I asked my PSO about a certain lay out the other day and how he thought it would work for me. His response kind of surprised me he he said it would be pretty strong since it would be roughly 3 1/2 from my pap. I couldn't figure out where he was getting the measurement from, till I realized he'd been keeping track of it thru my lessons. Ive  developed some very bad habits. He had been working one on one with me on release and footwork. Happy to say it's been a great help, but I didnt realize I lowered my track as much as I did there by changing my pap.

This all started during one of my "drill" sessions last weekend. I had to locate my pap, place a piece of tape and work on different releases. Making sure what I intended to do was really translated to the ball/roll. Plus having a solid colored ball, the tape was a good indicator as the ball motioned down lane.  Every thing else, it's on the PSO.

The PAP by itself doesn't tell anything about your roll, but it is useful as a marker for watching the skid, hook, roll transitions.  Hoswever, the PAP plus your axis tilt can give you the location of your first flare ring.  --  JohnP

Yes placing tape to mark pap is a great for seeing transition. I don't know why video ball reviewers don't do this to compare balls and see where the two balls start tradition. Not everyone who watch these videos see what the ball really does...

Maybe I shouldn't have said "ball/roll" but release instead. End over end, more side rotation, etc....
