Nothing like you expected can be really good or really bad. If we are talking about bad, I give it 3-6 games in at least two different houses, then start playing with surface. If no luck after surface adjustments I sell it. (Vital Energy the most recent ball to do that)

 See what it DOES do, then use it when I need a ball to do that. If I already have a ball that fills that slot that I really like, I often just sell the new one, and start over.

I have never bowled well with a ball OOB.  It seems there is always a settling in period where I learn what the ball will do and what conditions it works best on. This usually takes 15-30 games for me.  From that time on, I may play with surfaces and weight holes depending on conditions and how my game has changed.  My Wrecker is the only ball I have been truly frustrated with.  After surface and weight hole changes, I finally gave up and had the drill changed from from a 3.5" pin to pap to a 5" pin to pap, just to get the ball down the lane.

All of the things mentioned above. Surface changes; patience; throwing it in multiple houses. And one other thing.......I let a good friend of mine throw it and give me his opinion on it. We have similar styles, but he generally throws it a little bit better than me! So I observe his release.....and then make my decision based on the good or bad outcome.

Sometimes it really is, operator error.
