Please help!! Knee pain, help me get back my slide!!
« on: July 08, 2004, 07:20:21 PM »
Help anybody out there,I need to get back into sliding on last foot rather than planting. I'm experiencing some distress to put it mildly at present, and it certainly is not going away... PLEASE,PLEASE help an intermediate get back his slide.. Seriously, this is a real cause of concern for me, its hard to break bad habits and planting is mine!!!

Can u guys suggest exercises for muscle memory to get me back into sliding on last step, as I use too, just had too many breaks due to family and other stuff. Please advice any exercises that can help me, because as
I'm typing this out, I have 4 games to bowl tommorow, and I will be in pyhsical pain after the first game...

Please help, Im out of any idead, tried several of my own, and failed. If I cant get this right then my bowling and my knee will suffer for the long term.
All responses appreciated

Hey LooseL,

The planting can come possibly from starting the ball too late in your approach.  If you take 4 steps, make sure you start the ball with that step.  If you feel that you're already doing that, then try and push down with the ball vs possibly pushing up/and out which delays the timing of the ball to your feet.

If you have a 5 step, execute this on your second step.

Being able to plant indicates that your feet are getting to the line faster than the ball so you would want to match the ball motion to your feet in order to change that timing.  Hope this helps some or feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

and if its not a matter of timing, just the fact you cant slide, try acting like your tip-toeing (sp?) on your slide step so that you dont plant your heel. I have to stop and do this from time to time. Also, what kind of shoes do you have? Some of the shoes they have just suck for sliding.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated!

To tennispro, I have a 4 step approach, and I am consistant with my first two steps in terms of timing.. I think it has more to do, where I bowl have to put a little grunt into the ball on the downswing otherwise ball rolls out and hooks to brooklyn too often. This forces me I found, to want my 4th stride to reach out quickly for the lane for support. Help my balance, the down side of that is a very sore knee, and a little too inconsistant with hitting my mark/tagtet.

TO bowling kid, I'll remember the tip-toeing (sp??), bend a little more on third step with back a little straighter... Regarding my bowling shoes, I bought the cheapest pair of plain bowling shoes around $30 when I first started bowling around 3 years ago, very basic shoe.. Should I invest in a better pair, remembering that bowlers, and I mean some great bowlers of the past had the most simplistic bowling shoe around.. We all I know the old saying, "A good tradesman never blames his tools"....

To Trimnan, my shoes aren't excessively tight or anything.

Went bowling twice in the last few days, focused on sliding foot, a little better, still planting for the most part. Any other tips, I would love to read em??

Thnaks all, Looseleftie

looseleftie -- Yes, you should get better shoes.  But before you spend $200 on top line shoes, consider trying the Bowler's Slide Sock on the slide shoe of the pair you have now.  This will give you a very consistent slide.  Smash49 can give you more details, but I love mine.  If no one in your area carries them, you can direct order through this web site:

http://www.bowlersslidesock.com/

You will still need better shoes than you have now, for a slide heel and better traction on your non-slide shoe, but if you like the sock, you can get by for half the price of top line shoes.  Be sure to break the sock in per the instructions before using it.  --  JohnP

Hey LooseL,

The key word to me is "back" into a slide which means you were sliding okay before, correct?  and with the same shoes?  IMHO, I don't feel it's a shoe problem unless you say you're sticking vs planting, there's a big difference there.  If you're sticking on the lanes, then the guys are right about the shoes but I think you explained it already by saying you're trying to create a little more speed thru the heads to avoid the roll-out/brooklyn hit.

If this is the case, try and move further left to hopefully find more center oil to help the ball slide more naturally or switch to a harder ball so that you are not physically trying to change your game by throwing it harder.  Tell me if this makes sense to you....thanks.
