Poll: targeting method for THS (and sport)
« on: September 28, 2016, 04:16:07 PM »
I'm just curious to know what you bowlers on this site use for targeting. Most of you on here are over par average bowlers compared to other bowlers in other bowling forums. OR have many years experience in bowling.

I also know your systems changes depending on the situation at the time of bowling. But for THS, what's your norm for targeting.

For THS, I spot bowl at the end of the pattern. and for sport it varies where my eyes look, and I have two targets I try to hit.

Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

i use one target the dot for my corner pin spares. on my strike ball i use 0 targets as my feet stay in same spot every time.
Will expand arsenal after I polish my spares.

On THS I just look for breakpoint.

On sport I stay the same but add more focus to my projection the first 1/3 of the lane. I'm different and look down like Wes Malot and Stu Williams, I don't focus on a target. It's just how I've always bowled and it's from me playing baseball where I didn't need to see a target to throw the ball where I wanted to.

2handedVolcano.. congrats to being 30 over average last night..!! Next step 150nup.. ;-)
sport patterns are all about getting to the correct breakpoint. What ever method you use for targeting.. you must keep an eye on ball motion every ball as one will have to pre-empt moves and re targeting quickly as ball motion will change through the front of the lane quicker from straight to more of an arc, therefore missing final breakpoint inside quicker even if one hits their targeting point at the arrows...

I'm old school, one target. However, I am open to learning new ways to see if it improves my game.

I target/keep my eyes on where I want to be at, at the arrows through delivery.  As I get set (as far as where I want to be on the approach) I'll look at my mark at the arrows and then where I want to be at the break point and draw it back mentally to the arrows then go.

I've made my commitment before stepping up on the approach and try to turn the brain off (as best I can).

I don't use the dots at all.

The way I see it, a bowler can only look at one spot at a time.  My understanding of the Slowinski method is it is more of a planning phase.  Implementation of the method still has one visual target as you bowl.  It is the development of that target that is different.  Two-point methods are no different.  What is important is understanding how to make corrections and adjustments as the conditions change.

So for me, I usually use the arrows to target.  I have tried to look further down the lane, but have trouble with focusing on a spot with no discernible features.

SVstart34 that's pretty amazing IMO. To be able to target closer to the foul line and have a swing and ball direction to consistently hit the target.

I met Peter Somoff almost 15 years ago and I remember him telling me "anyone can hit the second arrow, but can they hit the break point that 40' down then lane that's an 1' wide and 3' long?" Then he taped a quarter down the lane and asked me to hit 10 in a row..... just proved I sucked looking at the arrows. Imagine if i looked down at the foul line :O

I TRY to find the break point, then connect it to a board at the arrows.   8)

I kind of had this crazy concept I did with my feet during setup on the approach. When I needed  to adjust, I would move boards and also would angle my feet correctly too.

Kind of like this.

A. I am standing on board 30 (I am right handed, so I used my left foot, which means basically my big left toe is on board 30).

B. I would line my left foot so it would be square to the foul line. (Foot is straight)

C. Then I would adjust the heel of my left foot.  In this case maybe move it 1/8 to 1/2 of a board left.

D. Next I would bring my right foot in line with my left foot.

E. Adjust everything else up from that (Waist, Shoulders, Arm Ball, Head,). Make sure everything  is pointing in the same direction.

Using this setup over time, I kind of figured out what targets I would go over at setup.

So if I wanted to go over 3rd arrow I would stand on board 32 and angle my foot correctly.  If needed to go deeper off 3rd arrow, I would move to board 36 and angle my foot a little more so I would still go over 3rd arrow, but my angle would be a little more steep.

Does it make sense?

I liked throwing straight at spares, and this really worked for me.

I like this I feel like I get to straight to the lanes sometimes as I move inside this might help that

My memory is fuzzy on this, but it kind of sounds like something from the Ritger clinics?

Sounds like it. I still do the toe heel alignment method - standing on board 10 1 to 1, if I want to finish at 10 for example. (if one doesn't drift) kick the heel 1/2 a board left (10/10.5), I'd finish 3 boards right at the line. Kick my heel 1" left or 10/11 board, I'd finish 6 boards right - the bowler has to know their "personal number" and with lay down point.

is this the same method as above?
