Question for short pin-pap balls
« on: April 15, 2017, 12:52:38 PM »
One of my favorite balls has been a Storm Ride that I drilled with a 2 7/8" pin-pap and a large hole on my pap. However that ball cracked back in October or so.

I've been debating about getting another ball and using the same layout because it allowed me to stay in the track area but it was far from a lazy reaction.

Just wondering if I should look at doing it on another similar ball to the Ride or if something with a little stronger core could be better. Especially since the main reason I want to do this again is for shorter sport shots and the Open.

Looking for other people's opinions on what they've used for short pin-pap balls

You could do something with a Drift, a little more diff and a taller core would get you a bit more motion.

Interesting you mentioned the Drift. A taller core is something I've been looking for and the Drift is one of the balls I've been looking at. Also been looking at the Dark Matter some too

I'm picking up my Drift at the end of the month, and am looking forward to it being a ball up from my Boost Pearl.

I've personally had trouble with these kinds of layouts on stronger balls with bigger cores as they either quit downlane or just never shaped properly.  I'd stick to something with a diff no greater than 0.040 and nothing with a low rg.  I've had success with Misfits, Outcasts, a Rude Dude and Slingshots but struggled on anything with my Nightmare, Ruckus and Reckless on anything that wasn't a gutter shot.

See, I am different. I have liked this kind of drill on a Track Money and an Ebonite Predator. Money was 1x4 with a small hole on the pap and my Predator was 2x4 with a hole on the pap. The Money, I could pitch right into the dirt and it was always silky smooth. The Predator was very strong

What exactly does a short pin to pap drilling do in terms of reaction?

On a symmetrical, it will stabilize the core so it will flare less, roll sooner and not be as violent in the backend.

Ruckus and nightmare are asym. Reckless is a high flare sym. All 3 would puke if I got them to the friction early on a ths but looked great on short sport

Remember, short pin to pap on assyms are different than symmetricals. As for the Reckless, I don't know enough about DV8 to make a knowledgeable assumption, but the covers I've seen are either SUPER clean or super early. The early covers will make the ball useless on a ths due to not being able to get into the puddle and wheel it. I drilled up a Grip It with the layout, but put a p3 hole in it. I absolutely hate it. Ball would pick up in the early mids and puke.

Yes asyms are different with short pin to axis. Neither rolled right for me on a ths as they would quit downlane on me.  Those balls and the reckless were just too much ball to be laying the ball down in the track and to expect energy through the pins.

My recommendation would still be to stick with something medium to weak and if for some reason it isn't enough, then just cut the surface.

Just punched up a Nitrous with a 2" pin-pap.
Put some surface on it and it rolls quite well, sets up and rolls, still continuous
100 bucks out the door...

I wanted a Rack Attack Solid for this, but after weeks of not finding one in 15lbs I gave in and just bought the Pearl on closeout since bowling.com had 15lbs. Hopefully some surface will get me the reaction I want

High RG, Medium/High diff balls roll very well with short PAP distances. MY lower rev teammate kills the THS with a Hyroad 2" pin to PAP, no hole. He also has a Track Heat like that which is a little less hook than the hyroad, but hits way better when the backends are clean.
