Span and Ball Speed
« on: February 10, 2016, 03:10:43 PM »
I was threw a ball with a shorter span last night, like about 3/16 shorter than my Wiki span and I seemed to pick up ball speed. About 1 mph with less effort.

Does this make any sense? What about to long, less ball speed?

Long term results would show whether if this new span is better for you or not, but short term says it's easier for  you to release it. Whether all other factors make it appropriate or not is yet to be seen (blisters, good rev rate, consistent release, etc.).
It COULD be that this span is better for you than the Wiki one. "Theories" are never 100% correct for everyone all the time. That's why they're theories and not facts.

Thanks Charlest, great points.

Keep in mind that fitting a ball to a person hands well and properly is
50% learned skill,
50% educated craftsmanship, with a strong dose of experience,
and
50% art, with a dash of human psychology thrown in for good measure.

A slightly shorter span perhaps combined with small adjustments of pitch seem to make it easier for some bowlers to keep the hand behind the ball until release.
