A lot of things have changed since you last bowled.  I suggest an entry level reactive resin ball to start with.  My personal favorite is the Ebonite Cyclone, pick a color combination you like.  You should be able to buy it and get it drilled at your local pro shop for around $135.  Be sure the pro shop guy watches you throw the ball and determines your PAP location.  If he doesn't know what you're requesting, find another shop.  --  JohnP

Not sure things have changed that much in 8 years.  Oil has gotten slicker but unless you will be playing on sport patterns house shots haven't changed that much and there is new equipment available that is comparable to stuff you liked before you quit

8 years ago entry level reactive resin balls had pancake cores.  Now entry level balls are as strong as mid level balls were then.  The Ebonite Cyclone started the trend to stronger entry levels and other manufacturers have made the move since.  That's what I was referring to.  --  JohnP

Over the past 8 years things that I added are interchangeable thumbs, and different slide combinations for shoes. Realizing that 15# equipment is acceptable. Those items may have been around 8 years ago, but were not used as much as in today's game.

Will your old equipment still work, probably. Will your span need re-checked - for sure.

I would suggest going to a good pro shop, and getting your span checked first. It may be close enough that you can still use your old equipment. If you want to plunk down some money, be sure the PSO takes the time to watch you throw a few frames, gets your PAP and tries to sell you an entry or mid level piece. I feel all companies make great entry and mid performance balls.

Welcome back after your time off, and good luck.

Do NOT jump in head first and drill new balls up front.  That is the worst advice anyone can give because it's a huge waste of money since you're just coming back to the game.  The technology has changed rapidly over the past 5-7 years and you may not know what completely fits your game now compared to back then.

The best advice is to visit a reputable pro shop and have your span measurements checked first.  Then, a good PSO will have you go out on the lanes to watch you throw a few shots and that allows them to check PAP.  They also should ask where you may be bowling as they'll typically have knowledge of what most places use for patterns and/or how the center plays.  Based on all of this, they can recommend some good balls that should fit your game specifically.  Also, the market has a lot of great entry and mid-level products out there right now from all of the brands.  That is where the PSO will likely start you and then you can add to the arsenal from there.

Any PSO that tries to sell you the most expensive bowling ball available upfront without doing any of this is not someone to be trusted.  Unfortunately there are many out there that can and will do this.

Based on working with the PSO that you decide to go with, I'd probably start with 2 balls and have them drilled to complement each other.  For example- 1 solid, 1 pearl or hybrid cover.  See how they work for your game, and then you can always add from there.

Many of us on here can recommend good pro shops based on your location as well.  If you need advice on a good job, let us know.   Good luck and welcome back to the sport.

I definitely agree with tommyboy74.  I've been back into bowling now for about 4 years after a break of about 15-16 years and just recently got my first ever brand new ball with the exception of a new, undrilled Zone ball (my spare ball now) I bought for $10 at a secondhand store right after getting back into the sport.  That's when I found this site and started asking questions and began surfing the internet and reading all I could find about all the different bowling balls and the "new" technolgies.  Talk about information overload!!!  But then I started checking out the local Craigslist and Ebay listings and started buying used balls.  Some worked good (and I still use them) and others didn't, and I resold them.  And after getting a  good relationship built with the PSO, I can ask his opinion on what he thinks I need or don't need.  Within 6 months of getting back into bowling, I'd spent less than $250. And that was for three balls (including plugging and redrilling), a Strikeforce 3-ball roller in great shape (paid $20 for it at garage sale) and a new pair of inexpensive bowling shoes.

The point is, you can get back into the sport fairly cheap.   And once you figure out what works, then you can go crazy and buy all the new balls you want.

Good luck!!

Let me reiterate, balls have not advanced that much in the last 8 years.  If your old stuff still seems to fit, work with it awhile till you build your game back up then decide where it is falling short for your needs.  A lot of the equipment out there is nothing more than repackaged balls from 8-10 years ago.

Exactly. Think about what was available about 8 years ago. I can think of the Virtual Gravity, Gravity Shift and Hy-Road from Storm and Rotogrip had the Cell and Cell Pearl. Any of these balls would work great today and that's just with Storm related products. Not to mention, the Hy-Road is STILL being produced.

I agree with you on everything except entry level balls.  8 - 10 years ago there was nothing at the entry level to match the Cyclone, Rhino, etc.  --  JohnP

Even today, the Cyclone is entry level in price only. It's much more ball than advertised.
