Bowling first regional this weekend
« on: April 18, 2005, 10:34:18 AM »
Well after the worst news of my collegiate career this past week, I am free this coming weekend and have decided to bowl the regional in lakeland.  Pattern 1, 40ft, on new proanvil should be fun.  I know alot of the guys just from bowling around town here and am very anxious to see how I can compete.  I'm hoping the new patterns will give the veterans a little less of an advantage over me.

Anybody have any past experiences with their first PBA event or advise for me?

Good luck.  Haven't bowled a regional, but based on what I've seen on the tougher patterns I have been on, what others have said about speed needs to be re-emphasized.  Speed control is critical.  I'd guess that as little as 1/2 MPH too much will blow you through your break point.  Maybe less.

Loose, we got disqualified because a bowler on our team dropped a class, therefor not full time student for the remainder of the semester.  He dropped it prior to sectionals and didn't tell anyone, so all the frames he bowled there were now 0.

I faired very well in my first PBA event this year mostly due to good execution during the tournament, but I think there were a couple of other things that helped me get there.

Take advantage of the official practice session.  Take plenty of equipment with you and test different ball reactions from different parts of the lane.  Don't have any preconceived notions about how you "should" play the lane and be wary of trying to play the lanes like others are doing.  You must match your game to the lane conditions, not someone else's.  The proof is in the pudding.  Also, develop a secondary and tertiary plan of attack if your "best line" doesn't work out.  For example, I was lucky to find that when the inside line "went away" the outside line with a different ball was there and vice-versa.  If I hadn't tried in in practice, how would I have known?

Keep an eye on and takes notes regarding transition during the practice session.  Don't stay on the same pair with the same bowlers during practice - move around.  Take notes on any irregularities on approaches, loose overlays, etc, that might effect you during the actual tournament.  Use the notes during the tournament.

I'd say "good luck" but I'd rather say "bowl well"
