Teammate stole prize money

Hey all,

I bowl in a sanctioned league, and was on vacation when they did the banquet where they gave away the cash prizes back in April. I had a teammate take the money for me who I thought I could trust to give it to me (over $200).

I have made numerous attempts to pick up the money, reaching out to him over Facebook, but he has made up lies for reasons he doesn't have the money, and has ignored my most recent messages.

I reached out to the President of the league back in July, who contacted him, and was told he had the money for me, which was clearly a lie. I reached out to the President again last week, who only said he would try talking to him again. I'm still waiting on a response there.

I did have a friend reach out to the local city association, who said there was nothing they could do on their end. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do other than cut my losses at this point? I'm not sure if this is something I could take up with the USBC. The guy is pretty well known in my area, and bowls in multiple houses throughout the city. It has stressed me out all summer considering I really could have used that money.

Try to get a face to face. It is easy to blow someone off electronically.

It is petty theft but I doubt the police would do much with it.

And the USBC would say league completed it's obligation to disbursement of the prize fund. And it sounds like you agreed to him being your agent to collect the funds.

Small claims court might be your best option. I'm not sure how that goes but he could be compelled to show up and then a judgement rendered against him.

Under USBC rules the best you might could probably do going through them is get his membership suspended or denied and possibly get him threw off the league. Of course that won't get you your money.

Rule 17 – Grounds for Disciplinary Action
17b. Improper Conduct
An individual can also be charged with the following violation(s):
2. Failing to distribute prize money to team members consistent with verbal or written agreements.

Penalty: Membership may be suspended or denied to anyone who is involved in a violation of this rule. Leagues may also remove the individual following the provisions in Rule 115a or Rule 115c.

NOTE: A complaint may be filed only in the current season or the season immediately following the alleged violation. The complaint shall be in writing and detail the charge(s) against the member(s) and the USBC rule(s) involved. The complaint shall be signed by the person(s)  making the charge(s) and filed with USBC Headquarters.

That's good the USBC even has a rule about it.  Shows what aholes many people are especially when it comes to money.

I would definitely pursue the rule 17 idea and follow through so he doesn't get off free.  It needs to be made known (through proper channels) so he isn't trusted with anyone else's money in the future and add to his (probable) list of victims.

If he bowls multiple houses and has his membership yanked it will cramp his lifestyle for some time.   We will quite often hold peoples money in our safe until they pick it up in person, but I understand your trusting a teammate.

Probably the best way to go. The inconvenience / embarrassment of appearing in court may cause the guy to pay you. If he fails to show, you get a judgment which can screw up his credit.

Of course, this is all predicated on the fact that the team captain, who is usually the recipient of the team's award money from the treasurer, will willing to testify that he gave the money to this 3rd person. I have seen such happen and often the captain is not willing to get involved.

Without evidence that this 3rd person has possession of the original poster's award portion, this "case" will go nowhere.

I hope you get your money but next time, pick a friend, not just a bowling acquaintance or just ask the president or the treasurer or captain to hold your money. At least they have a USBC enforced obligation to get the money to you.

You guys are all more civilized than I would be in this situation. I recommend a lug wrench as a possible solution.

Believe or not, sometimes a serious ass kicking is the best response.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm very happy to hear that there are actually rules in place by the USBC. I think that will be my first course of action. Mutual friends have told me he has a gambling problem I was unaware of and has screwed over teammates with money before (wish I had known this before). I'm not sure where I will take it from there, but you guys have provided me with some helpful solutions!

Let us know what happened with this.  I am guessing he will come up with your money rather than being suspended
