Trigger Finger
« on: September 17, 2017, 11:03:48 PM »
I'm wondering if this is a common problem, especially with older bowlers. I'm 52, and recently have been having problems, only with my right (right handed) hand. My fingers tend to lock up when I close my hand, and it sticks in a semi - closed position, but this is for all my fingers, not just the ring and middle. Do you bowlers have this and is this a common problem?
My left hand is fine and I do a lot of computer work.

Hello,
I have had that problem since the early spring this year. It was a complication of arthritis in my right ring and middle fingers. So, I had to switch to my left hand, which I briefly bowled with when I had a major hand injury when I was about 13, and had to for an entire season. As I understand it, bone spurs and calcium build-up occur in the first joint, and affect the nerves and tendons in the respective areas. They can go in and "scrap it clean," but, this will obviously hurt, and is no guarantee that the issue will not reoccur. There are other measures and physical therapies you can attempt, and they may work for you. I would talk with an orthopedics specialists who deals with the hand. I have noticed that my trigger finger caused that issue, then spread to other activities. I have, however, had a much better time since the hand switch, but that is not for everyone. Personal preferences and seeing a physician, (and the benefit of a couple of lessons to work on my timing and footwork for the new side), have helped me, but I definitely recommend seeing someone who deals with hand arthritis to see all avenues before you. It is something you can conquer. I hope this helps.

Relax ol Man, This is not that big of a deal. I am 76 yrs old now and have been plauged by this for over 20 years. My Dr. gave me a perscription for a little pill not much stronger than Advil, It is called  Indomethicin, an anti inflamatory, and for  pain discomfort. Also works well for my Knees. While I use this Med I have no problem with the trigger finger.  I have been told that the trigger finger is :: The ligiments get an inflamation. swell up a little and will not slide freely through the sheaths(tubes). Thus the herky jerky motion.
I do not really ever get involved in these post, as to stick my nose in but I understand your concern. Your next scheduled point of concern will most likely be carpal nerve problems from your wrist to the thumb, fore finger and middle finger. This bothers me more. Causes slight swelling and stiffness in the Thumb. The little green pill also helps with that.  Good luck, ASK YOUR DOC. Its worth a visit.

Thanks for the awesome responses guys!  I really need to go get it checked out at the doctor's, but I was also wondering if this is a common problem for bowlers?

Glad to help. I should add, that i have had carpal tunnel releases of both wrists in the last two years. For me the hand switch helped, but that was a change made for a twofold reason: trigger finger and arthritic thumb in bowling hand, and the move has helped me. Again, it is something to have a check done by a physician. As far as for commonality of this, I cannot say. I am an arthritis sufferer who has had carpal tunnel, which I believe are two counts in favor of me be susceptible to this issue. Take care, and good luck on the lanes!
